Exploring bug?

Hello fellow capsuleers!

I really enjoy this game and have been playing for about 2 months!
One of my favorite things is exploration, just recently moved to low sec.
Yesterday I encountered a frustrating signature and was wondering if that is some kind of bug. So I am using five probe formation, one in a center and other four like a cross around the center one, very basic, seen it in many explo guides. Also I have very well fitted ship for explo purposes. I use the minmatar probe, got the gravimetric rigs that improve scan efficiency, I use extended probe launcher and sister scan probes, tier one of course since I'm quite new, don't have the lvls for the skills to use tier two... also I have learned to second lvl astrometric aquisition and pinpointing to further increase scan strength.
Anyways so I was scanning down one signature, usually when I get them, I try to put them in a center of my probes overlapping scan radius and then reduce the scan range accrodingly one step at a time until I get the lock on it, tghe system works and I get them down fairly fast. So I was scanning this one signature and got it to 20%, centered probes around, reduced the range and it completely disappears, the range was about 2 AU. so I took one step back to 4 AU and the signature appeared in a same spot with same 20 %, I reduced it to 2 AU again and it disappears. Then I moved a bit to the left and a bit to the right, up and down, every time no signal, when I put it back to 4 AU it appears, at about the same spot and at 20%. So then I tried a different approach, I reduced just one probes radius to 2AU and left the rest at 4AU, that got the signature to about 24 %, So I reduced the scan range of another probe to 2AU and the signature disappeared. Basically I tried it with every probe, If I reduce the range of more than 1 probe the signature diappeard. after 15 minutes I just stopped trying. Now I scanned down the rest of the signatures with no problem, there were 4 others, except this particular. I had something similar a few times in high sec, but back then I just thought my equipment wasn't good enough.
The question is, is it some kind of bug or I do need to further improve my explo ship and skill set, and in the latter case some tips would be much appreciated!

Usually it is a problem with filters, but if you say you scanned 4 other things - then I have no idea.

Out of curiosity do you use filters? If say you ignore Grav sites using filters. It will show until your close enough to determine what site it is, then become ignored due to the filter.

The most likely explanation is, that you're using some kind of filter. What is actually happening, is that when you reach high enough signal percentage the site type is recognized. Since you have that site type filtered though, it gets removed just as you have instructed it to do.

Thank you for the quick response!

Yes I am using filters, and I think this could be the answer, I'm not at home so I can't double check this, but I think I have disabled Ladar sites. Had forgotten about those. Case closed then I guess and thank you again for the answers. :)

High scan deviation may create hits that completely drop off the scan range when you reduce it. Most common culprits: Gravimetric sites. Not sure how jumpy LADAR are. RADAR aren't sitting ducks either.

Can you elaborate on this a bit? what causes this deviation and how can I reduce this?
I still think that it' was because of my filters, but any information is welcome. :)

Scan is, I think random within certain parameters, depending on the site. There's a skill that allows you to reduce the deviation.

As a high result of a scan gets you closer to the real location of the site, you can manually move the probes in x,y an z, scan again and check if the result went up. So regardless of the shown hit, you can get closer in and thus reduce the distance, scan deviation misleads you. Though I only needed to use this trick once on a rather unruly gravimetric site.

If it's disappearing at 25% it's your filters.

Edit: At some point CCP split the checkbox for Cosmic Signature into the 5 groups, but disabled them by default. So for the first 0% to 24% when a signature's group is underdetermined, it'll show on your results. However, as soon as you exceed 25% and the group can be determined, it suddenly gets hidden without any feedback at all. You won't know if the signature disappeared, if it's out range of your probes, if it's ignored, or if it's hidden by filters.

So, yeah. Enable all the checkboxes. Big design mistake on their behalf (IMHO).

Another possibility was that it was a site that someone had already found and was working on, or finished.
A radar site that has been thoroughly hacked and there is no player on grid despawns in under a minute. It's not often the culprint, and the filters are the more likely one, but it is possible, it's happened to me a few times.

Oh, and kudo's for being a newbie, ignoring the bittervets that say you need a zillion Sps and taking the 'leap' into Low-sec.

I will bet good money on the answer being wormholes being filtered out at 25%. clear all filters as others have said.
