Hello I am back after a few years of inactivity, although still fairly new (9 mil sp). I am Caldari heavily into missile skills, however I am wondering how missiles fair in PvP as I haven't really got into it before (minus getting ganked). Back when I played, missiles were generally considered inferior to gunnery. Is this still the case? The fact they hit instantly is very appealing, especially after dealing with missiles for a while.

Considering I am so heavily invested in missiles and most of the Caldari ships use missiles, would it even be worth it to try to go for gunnery? Or would I be better off just starting a new character for a race that specializes in gunnery? Also, maybe anyone that has done both can chime in or someone who has cross trained both skills give me their opinion? Thanks for any help.

I started out being Pure Caldari, since Caldari are the Master Race, then I wanted to understand the inner workings of the other three races.

Went Minmatar first, they have some great PvP ships, just have to bring lots of duct tape with you.

Then thought Amarr could be good so I could fly a Legion & Guardian in some Incrusion fleets, bring earplugs, the chanting on the ships get very annoying.

So I then said WTF, might as well fly Gallente, (which might be finally useful after next expansion), but DO NOT FORGOT to bring some air freshener because Gallente ships stink.

Other than my ranting, do not start over, you have a very good base to start with. Hybrids will be getting a buff this expansion, so Caldari rail boats will be somewhat decent.

If you want to PVE, stick to missiles and tweak your skills to get the best bang per buck for PVE. If you want to PVP, Hybrids (shared between Gallente and Caldari guns), are getting boosted in the winter expansion, so train up for those.

Whatever happens, training gunnery support skills will be worthwhile as you can make a move over to Minmatar ships (gunnery and engineering (shields)) without too much fuss.

Yeah, I can comment. I've maxed both trees (all three if you count drones as another weapon tree).

Missiles are more limiting than guns, but they do present plenty of options. The Drake is still one of the best ships on market for PvP. It's cheap (after insurance) and can deal a respectable amount of damage from range while sporting a solid buffer. Nanodrakes are somewhat capable of solo, more traditional damage Drakes work in gangs, etc.

The gunnery tree is indeed quite long (but then so is the missile tree). I found it quite worthwhile to have the option of using either on the same character though. Having more options is a huge tactical advantage (and in the long run benefits your pocket book). I'm not sure why you'd pick up a new character just to train guns; the core skills are shared and it's not like gunnery takes less time on a clean character; I'd just start training gunnery supports and small projectiles and see how you like them (yes, you might as well go straight for a Rifter). From there you can branch out.

No. Never. It's never worth throwing away what you've done and staring over. Unless you enjoy having to buy up all your core skills again. Or want a different character, with a different set of standings. (FW for example, when you want to go with Minmatar or Galente, but are also a trader. Jita's no fun, when the faction navy's shooting you on the way in.)

Woo! CSM XI!
