Surface Pro and eve

tl:dr it works!

I haven't seen any posts about it so I figured I'd try it out. and I was inspired by gabe's post on PA http://penny-arcade.com/2013/02/25/the-ms-surface-pro (now if MS wants to send me some free stuff that would be great)

everything seems to default to high and it works but the fps is awful. once optimized for performance it seems happy at 60fps. I turned up a few settings then undocked *gasp* took a little spin and fps stayed happy in space. the fan seems to bet getting angry though. ship spinning with my fingers is a dream!

the screen isn't that large and it is at 1080 so everything is pretty tiny, mouse very much recommended. can't really hit the buttons well with my fat fingers. changing a skill queue is impossible, activating mods in space kinda works. I bought a mouse because I was anticipating these kinds of issues in various programs, although the keyboard (type screw the touch one) does have a track pad. and that works well enough.

also eve has sound!?

I played eve on my Cintiq (when I had one, but decided to return it for a 60" LED TV)... Intuos is fine

not the best game for a touch interface. even a pinpoint accurate Wacom stylus.

and for art, which is what I purchased the Cintiq for... there's too much gap between the drawing surface and the pixels, so unless your eyes are directly in line with the cursor and the pen tip, there's a noticeable offset.

the article also mentions some "jaggies" and whatnots, and I can't do with that. sensitivity might be good--that's all in the stylus--but the resolution is apparently poor, and that's in the body of the display.

for single-client gameplay, any mobile machine is going to get hot, so I don't hold it against this machine for doing so. Even the Cintiq as a display on its own was hot to the touch.

my old XPS Gen 2 laptop can still run 1 client -fine- and the display is 1920x1200. it's on its last legs though.

my point, and my personal verdict is... this fails at attempting to be a mobile gaming and art platform. the specialized hardware (a gaming laptop and a Cintiq) are substantially more effective at satisfying the needs of a enthusiast gamer or trained artist--up to serious gamers and professional artists.

you can run a Cintiq with a gaming laptop. sure, that's $2,000 - $3,000 depending on the laptop used for the combo, but no matter what the cost, if a product such as the Surface Pro is ineffective, it's a poor use of money no matter what the cost.

the "jaggies" were because the new file defaulted to 100dpi, he said he turned it up to 600dpi and it looked fine. "the default dpi for a new file was set to 100. I bumped it up to 600dpi (the resolution I draw the strip at) and sure enough the jaggies were gone and my lines were beautiful!"

I don't really do a whole lot of art, mayhaps the surface will make me want a nicer drawing display down the road however. trying to draw with a mouse was fun for about an hour back when I was 5 or so. so I haven't really tried it since on a pc.

one of the biggest issues I've found with the touch screen and eve is that you have to do a little double tap to activate mods, one to have the mouse hover over the mod and another to activate it. although sometimes it seems like that will activate and deactivate the mod.

and I don't think it is trying to be a mobile gaming system, it is just the hardware is getting good enough in general that it can squeeze a bunch of gaming in. yay Moore's law! I think the main demand will be from businesses that want to continue using existing software. Individuals will probably find a bunch of more novel uses that may increase demand there, but for a bunch of people I think the cost will be a limiting factor, why not just buy an ipad or cheap laptop instead?

I downloaded office 13 and onenote seems to be pretty sweet. writing on powerpoint slides is easy.

stylus is a poor interface when sometimes you need a single-click, and others a double

I still can't justify a smaller screen quasi-Cintiq for $1000, it is just a bad idea -imo-

found a video clip of someone else running eve on a surface. the biggest problem initially was that you can't get the cursor on a large portion of the screen. I fixed it fairly quickly and easily enough that I didn't bother writing about it, nor did I remember it till I watched the video. no idea what I did to fix it.

if it was a good idea, i would be happy for you, but it's not, so I think you made a mistake. have you ever had a Cintiq

nope, but I've never needed one. the way I see it worst case I over paid for a laptop. best case I get a laptop and tablet in one! I haven't bought any sort of fancy electronic gizmo since spring 2005 (a psp). Apple says they aren't afraid to cannibalize their products because someone else will be able to swoop in and fill the void. Right now it seems to me that there won't be any big voids for the next few years, things feel a bit stable, so what the heck try something out!

I want so I can play from the couch, with the stylus. I assume it will overlay the software keyboard if you want to type?

Arguments about price here are silly it is all a relative term just like it is in the game.

128gb ssd, I have 65.2GB free with eve, office, and a few gigs of music on there.

and yes you can get the onscreen keyboard, it is good enough for logging in, I wouldn't really want to use it to chat but some might have no problem. I haven't really used touch screen keyboards before, and it takes up a lot of screen space. multitasking seems difficult with eve open, although that might have been mostly my fault as I put the taskbar on autohide so I would have more screen room in onenote earlier.

ooh! in chrome (and firefox it looks like, and the eve in game browser!) you can use pen gestures to go back/forward

Admit it, you posted about it here because you overpaid and you want other people to think it's cool so you can feel better.

You overpaid.

It's a bad idea to play EVE via touch interface.

You could get a lot more laptop for that price. i5 for $479, or an i7 for $699.

Being able to play EVE in a way that isn't practical, or on a screen that isn't the best for latency or trails, on a laptop that has a tiny SSD... is a bad idea, you should really return it.

that I should worry about losing my hearing is nonsense, because there will always be -=BASS=-

I posted here because I hadn't seen anyone post that eve works on a surface. anyways my first laptop, bit over 5 years ago, was ~1000, and that was with an amd 1.6ghz cpu, 512MB ram, ati x700, 100GB hdd. I have little intention of playing eve on this, if anything it would be for skill changes (maybe market orders if I can ever be arsed to put some up again). I have a perfectly good desktop for actually playing games.

for my uses it seems pretty much okay. yea probably overspent a bit, oh well, I had the money. ya gotta spend some of it at some point.

tap and hold -> right click (heh but all the menus are too small to click). or use the side button on the stylus. kinda crappy in combat, but fine for most other stuff.

Good to hear you can run eve on a surface pro. What sort of battery life are you getting in ordinary tasks like we surfing, youtube etc..?

it lasts through my school day of ~4 hours, which is about 3 hours of onenote + pen, and 1 hour of music/browsing.

woohoo! I'm sure most of the classrooms have one I could use, I just haven't bothered to look yet. The library and one of the lounges have outlets available, and probably more places. I haven't really paid any attention to how fast it charges,

on that note the charging cord is painfully short.

Dude why are you so concerned about his purchasing decision? Sure it doesn't fit your lifestyle ok he didn't buy it for you.

Nowhere does he say he bought this thing with the single purpose of playing EVE. From his later posts it looks as if he bought it for school. Which IMO would probably do the job.

As I mentioned before money isn't a considering factor for some people in this world, or is a small factor. Just because it doesn't make sense for you there is no reason taunt him for his purchase.

The only person I think is trying to look cool here is you trying to find failure in something that you don't have all the facts on.
