I have installed EVE on an external hard drive that I tend to move around with quite a lot.
The problem I have at the moment is that when I go to a new computer i have to re-do all my personal settings, and also, after a while the settings that are on a computer I acess often tend to disapear, setting me back to square one.

is there a way to make the EVE clinet save the settings, cache, and everything somewhere on the external hard drive?

PS: I also have 3 accounts that have their own settings.

Thank you

I have no luck

I copied the char ID .dat file to my EVE installation on the external HDD
but when Ioad EVE it still saves in the local C drive.

Copying the folder is just the first step i think. That doesn't mean EVE will look elsewhere for those settings, it must be reading the location out of the registry or a .ini file. But since i am not at my pc i can't help much for now. I too would welcome some input into this topic.

Thought the same thing... but I don't see any .ini file that has these settings in the EVE install directory

In your folder options- enable hidden files & folders

In Windows 7 the path is: C:\Users\Yourname\AppData\Local\CCP\EVE\c_users_eve_online_tranquility\settings\YourChar ID#

Where you character ID# is can be found by evemon

Pr0tip: copying this file is a good way to set up accounts with isboxer

This. Not the EVE installation folder.

yes, this file has all my settings, I understood that

But what I need is to make EVE read that file from my external HDD.

It used to be possible to do what you wish but now CCP use the ‘Launcher’ to start Eve I don’t think it can be done any more.

The old way was simply to add /end /LUA:OFF, to the shortcut that launched Eve and then the client would save all the settings in the same folders that Eve was installed in.

But now the ‘Launcher’ is used this would most likely not work, to further compound your problems you are using a portable or external hard disk. The problem with this is it may not appear with the same drive letter on every machine you connect it too and this could cause the disappearing files you have noticed.

The only way I could suggest you proceed (and it’s a long shot relying on the drive having the same letter on every machine), is to copy all the settings from one master machine to your external hard disk, then use this copy to update each machine you connect the drive too.

You only need the three folders 'cache', 'overview' and 'settings', copy them to your drive then refresh each folder on each machine after you connect the drive. You will need to run Eve once to make the folders then you can refresh them each time thereafter.

I’ve not tried this so good luck if you wish to go ahead.

Thanks for the info.

you've just given me a bright idea

create a script that populate the 'cache', 'overview' and 'settings' with the files I want everytime i connect he extrenal hard drive to a computer before I even load EVE.
Since the files will already be there, the EVE client will simply read form them without creating new ones.

It's far fetched and techy... but it beats having to redo everything everytime I move to a new PC

Run the EVE client in portable mode by adding in the shortcut 'Target' path '/LUA:OFF". This will force EVE client to create the cache folder, where your settings are, in the same folder where you have the EVE installation.
