Necro or not, does anyone find it ironic that the OP, who is proclaiming an imminent 'failscading' of a game/entertainment device, joined Black Core Alliance?

Just sayin'.

This thread in a nutshell is Linux fanboyism

Watch_ Fred Fred Frederation_ and stop cryptozoologist! Fight against the brutal genocide of fictional creatures across New Eden! Is that a metaphor? Probably not, but the fru-fru- people will sure love it!

I think a lot of people are misjudging the amount of money a decent gaming PC actually costs now-a-days. It is very possible to make a machine capable of playing the most recent games at 'Ultra' setting for under $1000. The PC I'm using right now cost about $700 and handle everything I can throw at it.

So while the mobile industry may be getting larger, the gaming-PC world is getting cheaper. Also, the people buying tablets are not necessarily the same people that would buy or even want a gaming PC in the first place. I certainly don't think we're losing market share because of this.

CCP recently indulged in a bit of self-congratulation following widespread media coverage of their 450,000th paid EVE subscription. Mainstream news outlets, including Forbes, actually remarked on the game’s success despite its venerability and outdated subscription model. EVE is proving unexpected staying power, growing steadily while other MMOs such as WoW have struggled to retain monthly customers.

All this attention might suggest the future of EVE is rosy and bright, but consider:

- The future of traditional x86 and x64 PC architecture is increasingly vague. Laptops have been outselling desktop systems for years, but tablet sales are gaining exponentially. A whopping 122 million ARM-based tablets and smartphones sold in 2012.

- Within two years, ARM devices will account for more than half of all personal computer sales.

- 97% of those devices will employ touch as their primary input. A full 50% will support gesture input and 10% will natively display stereoscopic 3D.

- The PC gaming industry has little appetite for Windows 8, as evidenced by leaders such as Valve Software. Valve is currently backing an aggressive transition to Steam for Linux, with a repository of 40 games and counting already available to open-source users. Valve is also throwing support behind Oculus Rift, a revolutionary developing virtual reality system.

To be honest.. I stopped reading after that. Valve are catering to an opening market in which a fair few Windows/Mac users have gone linux. It's called catering to the demographic. Especially considering Windows 8 isn't well liked.

Now you might think that the common place PC is going to be out of fashion, I can tell you right now it won't be. Coding for databases applications, games, data manipulation to name a few will always be on a PC as they're going to be the only platform for the next 25-50 years that can handle it.

Yes the interface might change but that's not likely to happen for another 10 years at least and by then, who knows.. maybe CCP will finally be able to let us use a joy-stick.

Until then, quit; can I have your stuff?

OK, I stopped reading after 7 pages, so forgive me if I say anything that was already covered :)

I actually think the OP has some valid points, as do the hundreds of replies, but I believe people are missing one fundamental argument to the OP.... the eVe subscriber base WILL NOT shape the future of computing / technology ..

Most of the arguments against the OP are 'I won't play eve on a tablet, eve isn't possible on a tablet' etc etc but lets face the numbers, maybe 200k people that play eve, if that ? (I have 4 accounts, most have I suspect 2, with some even more hardcore running 4+) so whatever 'subscriber numbers' are reported, at least half that.

I have been using desktop PC's since before time began, I started my computing life with a 16k ZX81 (with Thermal printer) spending hours typing in programs from magazines, only to play them for an hour and then switch of an lose it :P wasn't technology amazing..

Now, I code php, and do quite a lot in the way of building / repairing / installing server systems etc, and I admit, that as long as I can remember my own name, I will be using a desktop PC - but I also own an iPad, and an iPhone, and I use them a hell of a lot, and find more and more uses every day that make my life easier, than relying on my desktop ..

My son, is 17years old, full time student. I recently gave him my old x64 quad core AMD, Geforce GFX, 27" monitor (I upgraded to an i7) and you know what he uses it for (and this IS the trend, with all of his peers at school) FACEBOOK, Ventrilo, youtube, that's pretty much it... the remainder of his computing experience is on xbox 360 / playstation, and even now, he tends to use my iPad more and more for the above mentioned (the iPad does an awesome job with all 3 examples)

Yes, we can all sit here and say that we will all play eve on a desktop until we die, but the fact is, I'm 43 now, and as much as I love my MMO's - I'm getting bored, we all will one day, but the new generation are playing consoles / doing everything else on tablets / phones where possible, it's easier, more convenient, and actually makes sense ...

The eve community is not getting any younger, and one day, eventually, you will all stop playing, what the OP was trying to say (I think) is that for it to carry on, it needs to be ported somehow to a platform that IS growing in popularity, and IS taking over a lot of the roles that have been primarily desktop based in the past)

I still think that PC's will never die BTW, just that the younger generation will probably not catch onto eve, because for most of them, it's consoles / talets / phones / dirty bedroom floors...

My 2 cents

Someone better tell Sony, since the PS4 is using x86 architecture!

The only way I could see touchscreen working for most games is as a supplemental input device. There are a number of issues with touch for gaming - mainly that your finger tends to get in the way of the screen and comfort over extended periods.

That said, I could see touch working for some aspects of a game like eve. A separate touch screen that supplemented the main monitor(s) and allowed you to use the map, browse the market, fit ships, update training and things like giving an FC a dedicated fleet view (with the new drag and drop members stuff) and so on would be pretty cool.

I really, really doubt PC will go away. Ever. It will always be there is in some shape or form, wether it be like it is now or something along the lines of Steambox or both. And if it goes the way of Steambox we will still be talking about PC-games and EVE is one of them, so thus I find your theory to be lacking.

Instead of taking the OP seriously, a more productive use of time would be to figure out how to best laugh in OP's face in 5 years when the PC is still very much alive.

Yes. Smart devices and touch screens will grow. Just like consoles grew out of nothing as well. And just as people predicted consoles would kill PC gaming. It didn't. Everyone wanted to play WoW instead. Its been mildly way more successful than any console game.

Then there was 'Network Computing' - remember that one from the late 90's? When we'd all be using thin clients powered by Citrix servers? Hows that working out? I used to sell into that market, and rest assured it still sucks to use it.

Now it's the 'Cloud'. Big whoop. I was doing online syncing 10 years ago. It just got a new shiny PR names.

Different devices serve different purposes. If you want to go play touch screen games, good luck. I played Angry Birds. It was fun, but hardly 'deep'.

But great for touch screen. I can own both. And I have a PS3 with wonders like Journey on it.

As for Valve? For all their wailing, it hasn't altered their sales one bit. Windows 8? I love it. Never touch WIndows Store. Ever. Steam? Every day.

So Valve want to create a linux PC that plays games? And has the option of running it off the big screen? Great.

Then there is VR headsets. Great.

And Ouya in development. Great!

None of this will kill the PC. PC gaming hasn't diminished. It's grown.

EVE? Its doing better than ever thanks. Loving it. 20,000 more logged in that 8 months ago. I call that a return to form.

Think a touch screen will give you something as complex as EVE? As complex as WOW? Anytime soon? Good luck with that. The very nature of the device absolutely limits its functionality. Its not a question of hardware. Its a question of the interface.

Keyboard + Mouse = wide flexibility. Heck, I even plug my PS3 controller into my PC and make it think its an Xbox controller for all those great games like Mark of the Ninja. Can you're touch screen do that? It will only get better with the new VR headsets and surround screens, and screen prices will continue to plumet.

PC's. The futures so bright I need shades.

Wait how can touch not do what EVE does with a mouse?

Seriously I use teamviewer from my phone and all issues are connection and crap hardware, both of which will be fixed if I spend more money.
Touch works just fine for eve.
Touch does not work for traditional FPS

Also Im getting a leap motion just because screw you that's why.

Between Mac and PC support EVE is covering a huge swath of the landscape. The average person will never play a game like EVE, and the people who play a game this complex are likely to game primarily on a dedicated station vs a mobile platform. Furthermore, while some of these people use Linux, most of them will also likely have access to a station with OSX or Windows.

The title of this thread sounds like one of those view aggregator news ads that over night took the place of real journalism.

"this woman shaved 20 years off her face with this simple home remedy (and why plastic surgeons hate her)" and so on

Well you know the routine.

The very sun of heaven seemed distorted when viewed through the polarising miasma welling out from this sea-soaked perversion, and twisted menace and suspense lurked leeringly in those crazily elusive angles of carven rock where a second glance shewed concavity after the first shewed convexity.
