People not showing in local

I've run into a gate camp in low lately with explosive side-effects for my ship. Now that's common occurence in eve.
However, I was the only person in local chat at this time.
Furthermore, I have noticed several times in low ships, whose pilots where not appearing in local chat. Mostly cyno frigs, I think.

I've been under the impression that it is impossible to leave local chat, hence providing a fabulous soucre of intel in low.

Have I been wrong or can these explained by some odd lag or log in/off effects ?

Two things at work here I think.

1. You run into a camp but no one is in local....if you ran into the camp and died in the system you were the only person in how exactly did you die if you warped to 0 and jumped immediately? Were you caught on the other side when they chased? Further, do you have local up at all times (and by "all times" I don't mean "whenever you care to click from your corp tab to the local tab because apparently screen space is too valuable for you).

2. Just because a ship is in space and on d-scan does not mean it has a pilot. You see this a lot in WH and nullsec space and it's rather simple - people eject from their ships in a POS shield and leave it there for safe keeping. Whether they are logged in or not does not matter, the ship remains in the shields and only accessible by those with access to the POS.

I was ganked before the jump. Actually, I warped to 0 km instead of "jump". I have local up all times in low.

These ships where next to a station (not a POS) and with a pilot. Not sure if the pilot was logged in, this might something with the 15 minute timer.

Some people logoff their cyno ships after jumping, so the pod safes itself automatically after the ship is blown up.

I agree that local needs to be abolished in low sec.

The only thing I see on your killboard is the loss of your capsule in May of last year. What did you lose, where, and to whom?

If you're sure there was someone in system but invisible in local should petition it and see what they say. 2-3 years ago there was an exploit called "sphere" allong this:

But it's old stuff and should be fixed.

after reading this...why do I think that OP was ganked by either Incursion Gate Rats or a wicked Faction spawn....

Since the cessation of their usefulness is imminent, may I appropriate your belongings?

So you warped to 0, landed on gate, and didn't go through and sat there while they shot at you? If this is true, you probably didn't notice them in local chat.

If the "Name" section of your overview shows a pilot's name it is piloted by someone in local....if it just says the ship's type (ie. "Raven" for a Raven) then it is no longer piloted. Further, if they were right at a station, they could be a cyno ship as mentioned. If this is true the Cyno will still be lit and the ship will be glowing slightly white where the cyno's animation is.

Was on a fleet 2-3 weeks ago and had the same thing happen.

Was 20 ships camping a gate - and they were not showing in local.
Wasn't a log off timer thing or cyno or anything else - It was a bug.

Our entire fleet had the same bug and everyone in the fleet witnessed this -so I would say the OP is correct - something is not right.

There is a 2nd issue too - but I wan't to re-produce and fraps it before I do a petition.

Gate camps i dont understand, those must be a bug.

Cyno ship in quite normal, alot log them off once they are done the cyno. Pilot and ship stay on spot until cyno is down, but as they are logged out they will disapear from local. You often do this to save the pod of the cyno pilot. So if anyone blow up the cyno ship, the pod automatic warp out.

I have ran into something like this in nulsec a few weeks ago. They didnt engage me but when I tryed to burn closer to them they warped off. And no I do not think it was a rat since it had a pic of an avi on there profile card.

Thats just australian lag + how bad you are. You are often dead before your computer can update local.

"Aussie Lag" is bit like "British Intelligence". It doesn't actually exist.

Antipodeans are generally at a disadvantage due to poor cogntive repsonse brought about from long term abuse of alcohol and cannabanoids. The ping to server issues have a negligable impact in comparison.

What's a 350-400ms ping got to do with anything when it takes 5 minutes to find the mouse?

However, the ability to roll a number, crack open a coldie, keep the Sheila in the throws of ecstacy and chucking a prawn on the barbie while hitting the warp icon should never be underestimated. :)

if it was then the added element of surprise would be nullified by the reduction in people willing to go there due to the greatly increased risk.

Then the FW stores would be worth much more money and I have no problem with that happening.
