An Experiment in Capsuleer Self-Moderation [ New IC Channel Forthcoming ]

I often have debates with the other Summit Moderators and Patrons (and ex patrons) regarding the role and need for capsuleer moderation in the channel to promote an enriching gathering space for all of you.

There is an opinion that a firm hand and a well-defined rule set is needed, what with the increasing amount of idiots who cannot control themselves.

There is another opinion that much of the idiotic behavior is merely in reaction and emotional opposition to those rules for the sake of being unruly, or the result of personal grudges.

Let us conduct an experiment and see the results. Either the rule-centric and firm hand model will be validated, or an alternative approach will prove viable as well.

We will create a new capsuleer channel this weekend (( Name will be Forthcoming )).

We will leave it open for two to three weeks.

Channel Rules and Goals are simple and as follow:

A) To provide and promote a capsuleer meeting space to exchange ideas, converse, debate, etc, essentially identical to the goals of The Summit.

Rules

1. Don't be a sh*t. If you feel a need to use foul language, make threats, act in a certain way, you do what you need to do. HOWEVER if myself, or a majority of the patrons feel you are sh*tting up the channel with your nonsense you will be banned, no questions asked, no recourses.

There are no 'specific' rules to bend or break or push. If you act a fool then you run the risk of being removed, plain and simple. It will be up to patrons to choose if acting in a certain way or displaying certain things either CONTRIBUTES or DETRACTS from the group experience.

There is no MOD SHIELD. If you dislike how someone is acting, block them, and as the kids say, HTFU.

So, will we find people can behave themselves and act accordingly? Or will the lack of rules and regulations fail, and validate the need for strong social controls?

Results will be up to you!

I predict this will be a failure which Summit moderators will use as an example any time anyone complains about their heavy-handed overly-authoritative backwards moderation that frequently gets in the way of good conversation for no good reason.

If this wasn't designed to fail, I suspect you'd leave it open for longer than a few weeks. Who wants to join a channel they know will disappear?

If you wish the experiment not to be a failure, then encourage participation and constructive behavior. Starting off with this sort of thing is not likely to garner interest from a variety of people yes?

Again if you have grievances with the way things are done in that channel, prove them wrong in this one.

I am interested in this experiment, but I am also a little concerned.

The Summit does not have clearly defined rules, nor does it sound like this mysterious new channel will have clearly defined rules.

It will become a very similar sort of thing where certain people performing certain actions, or saying certain things, will be acceptable, while others who do the same will be found unacceptable.

I pray that I am wrong with my assumptions, but what you describe seems to indicate that.

Actually, every experiment has to have a deadline in which results will be analyzed and conclusions drawn. I won't go to this channel because captain Vitalia set it up, but it is an interesting experiment.

Then again, this is your chance to prove such claims wrong, by participating and putting peer pressure on participants to maintain an open and welcoming environment.

The channel is not political, and I'm merely the creator.

As I said, I am looking forward to this experiment and shall be participating wholeheartedly.

Interesting. The only criticism I might have is that the "a majority of the patrons feel you are sh*tting up the channel with your nonsense you will be banned" bit opens up for this to be just another popularity contest or that it'll turn out to become a circlejerk in the end. Of course, it might not. This could be the start of something beautiful.

Or a cornucopia of stupid.
Or beautiful.
... maybe a beautiful cornucopia of stupid.

I'm going to need drugs for this.

Yes, I understood as much when you said it was a reflection of The Summit. Still, going to pass, don't like seeing blooder faces too much. If at all. Can't help it elsewhere, but at least not increase the amount of exposition to your kind.

You know not what you speak of, captain Otsito. You would do well not to give them the chance to prove you wrong. They're good at it.

Bah, they're no crazier than the rest of the Empire. More violent in the case of the raiders, but pirates will be pirates. As much as I make fun of the faithful, the Sani Bikkies are no better nor worse than any other religious group and all the nations struggle with overly violent pirate infestations.

If you want to improve things, you could always resign and make this "experiment" a permanent channel. I'd be interested in helping you then, but I have no interest in helping The Summit.

I've tried, but their problems will persist while the ownership supports the disproportionate actions and personal bias of moderators who are only interested in moderating for the sake of their egos.

This will absolutely be a permanent channel I will keep open if it proves successful.

There will be no other moderators, and I will rarely be in-pod to monitor the channel.

IE attendees will be on their own to settle their own issues, block people they don't want to speak to, and keep things running constructively.

If Silas' involvement is in anyway indicative of the turn-out of this channel, I predict that many more Capsuleers will seek to resolve disagreements through action and not mudslinging.

Not so. I'm merely providing the venue.

People will choose to conduct themselves appropriately or they won't.

They will choose to solve any problems on their own or they won't.
