With all the horse meat in EU, one of the things I have not seen is the question of: Where did the horses come from? Are there some huge horse farms perhaps in Poland? And if EU raises so many horses, what are they for? We barely use horses these days, we don't use them for transportation, we don't use them for farm work, we don't use them for industrial work. Why is EU has such a glut of horses, enough to sell them to meat packers whole sale, year after year?

Romania. Being an extremely poor country, most people got around with horse and carriage. With EU regulations forbidding them to ride their horse and carriages on the motorways (can't do 80 km/h, heh) the horses get dumped by the thousands every year.

The "quality" of these horses is... questionable.

From our local horse farmers:

"A steak of vale is worth 17 eur/kg, and our foal steaks sell for 22 eur/kg. Do you think someone would seriously use horse meat instead of cow?"

Not skeptical, but WHERE... and citation would be nice.

I got an awesome horribly cheap quality wood table... the instructions said "Do not use a drill" so I immediately thought "Hey, that's a great idea! A drill would make the screws easier!

The table looks like an iron maiden now P

Meat does not equal beef. Your title is misleading...you had me thinking there was no meat in meat pies, when in fact there's simply no BEEF.

You can look at this crap and tell if it's real beef or not. I don't see it as a scandal, but more as misrepresentation. I'm not going to eat meat that contains only 30% beef unless the other 70% is made up of another type of real, genuine meat. It could be lamb, horse, pork, chicken, whatever. What worries me is all the other garbage they put in these things. It seems that this product is only guilty of exaggerating the amount of beef in it.

Here's map of Europe that shows places that sell horsemeat labelled as beef.

If all food products were correctly labelled with ALL the different individual ingredients people would no longer buy sausages, faggots, haggis, corned beef, luncheon meat, fish balls, chicken nuggets, kievs, doner kebabs, minced meat....the list is endless.

Horse, dog, cat, ...even rats...it's all gotten into the food chain in various amounts at various times.

I know first hand that some of the processed sh*t that you all eat is substandard meats. I worked in an abattoir for 6 years. Any meat that was inspected and was found "not fit for human consumption" was packed off and sent to a meat processor where it was minced and cooked and made into pies, pasties, sausage rolls, chicken nuggets....the heat would kill off any bacteria and it was then fit for human consumption.

This is in fact a good thing.

People should eat this **** if they so desire, but the majority do not want it and would go vegetarian rather than consume such **** if they knew what it was.
