This + then allows you to move a slider on the Up/Down axis and another on the Left/Right axis. Setting a turn amount. The ship then proceeds to turn whatever distance you set, and as it turns, the slider returns to zero. (Maybe an option to 'lock' it which makes it turn rate at current speed or something). This is Submarines in space after all, lets make controls that match the way the flight system actually works. 10 degrees down angle, rudder 20 degrees left, all ships come around.
Fleets can then actually do turns.

That sounds horrible. Have you ever tried a flight simulator with a mouse only mode?

I'm not actually sure they exist.

The first edition of Microsoft Flight Sim was primarily key controlled and I think they had the key commands in there at least a few times since then. It was good fun at the time but really clunky to control.

All the recent versions have a mouse plus keyboard option.

A joystick system would work well, but not with the 1 tick per second in place.

Eve is not a Flight Simulator. If it is a 'simulator' of anything, it's a sumbarine simulator. And those games you drive exactly like I described. Setting a turn angle/rudder angle, and letting the turn happen in it's own time.

Changing Eve to a WASD system changes the very nature of Eve, it is not an 'extension' that allows for control. Since it turns us into Fighter planes/FPS in space instead.

Or something like my full function cockpit.

I'll trade in my WW2 fighter for an inside view from a Rifter.

Who the hell links to photobucket?

Here's a what the inside of a rifter might look like as you're leaving the ship at a station.

With all these "cockpit view" posts, I must link this here: http://community.eveonline.com/races/wetgrave/ (relevant bits at page 4 >, but read it all, don't be a bore)

He was suggesting "Mouse only" as in "Click on the rudder button, click on the throttle button, etc" not "Mouse and Keyboard."

I understand that. And what you are suggesting is taking the click in space (and let the turn happen in its own time) interface and changing it into a fairly horrible sounding interface. In other words, no change other than making the interface harder to use.

"Real men" use ESDF, freeing up QAZ for extra hot keys.

Just remember that EVE is not a twitch combat game. What saves your butt is controlling your excitement level and remembering to turn off overheating before you melt your guns.

technically theres is a workaround to having just 4 keys command 3d flight. It means having 2 pitch and 2 roll keys, in order to change heading right, you roll right then pitch "up" which effectively has you turning right, you just cease pitching up and roll "level" again afterwards

Just saying, not trying to say i agree with the suggestion

No, I was suggesting it as an addition, if you can find that point in space you want, use it. If you want to turn your ship a precise angle rather than click whatever is handy, use the sliders. Also on the time scale of Eve, it's not a 'horrible' interface, it's a very natural and intuitive interface.
You could even then extend it to WASD support if you wanted to move the sliders, as well as mouse clicking.
However WASD flight like a flight sim... Ick, no thanks. As even you agreed, it's not a flight sim currently.

Why would you ever care the precise angle of your turn? What possible use does that have? (Fleets can coordinate turns by having everybody approach/keep distance from the FC)
"We can do it this way in addition to the current way" is not a very good defense of your idea. You need some benefit to justify the effort it would take to implement your idea.
Having to compute vectors and try to figure out what "23(deg) left, 18(deg) up, 34% power" looks like (or conversely, what numbers to put in when you want to go to X spot) in the 1s between updates is a lot less intuitive than "double-click where you want to go."

I'm not advocatinging WASD(QEZC) at all.

I'd like to see this in a new game that ran in parallel to EVE with players piloting drones and fighters. It wouldn't work in eve.
