Well, since you asked so nicely, I’ll tell you all about them. Forgive me if I over explain, but I’m going to cover all the basics. There is a full explanation of cyno feilds in the EVElopedia.

First, there are two kinds of cyno modules: Cynosural Field Generator I & Covert Cynosural Field Generator I. The first one is the most valuable. Capital ships move from system to system by locking on to the cyno fields that these modules generate. Having an alt means that you can create a cynosural field for your corp mates to jump to. Typically, a simple frigate is used.

The other module, the Covert one, is less commonly used. Only a Black Ops ship can jump to them; only certain ships can fit them. One of them is the covert ops, as you mentioned. How often these ships are used for cyno fields I cannot tell you. I can say that I’ve seen a lot of simple frigates.

So, a cyno alt usually would use a frigate with a cyno module. It’s that simple. The alt will need Electronics V and Cynosural Field Theory I. Training it past that will reduce costs (it runs on Liquid Ozone).

There are 3 basic types of cyno alts:
1. Minimal: Science 5 + Cynosural Field Theory 1 (Kestrel pilots seem popular).
2. Clone with <900,000 skill points (for free medial clones, as cyno ships usually get destroyed).
3. Covert (requires Covert Ops).

Most cyno alts are type 1. I prefer type 2, but they take about a month to train. Type 3 also take about a month to train, but can do far less than type 2.

Type 2 example: Here's a plan I had for an Amarr character (starts with Amarr frigate 2), but it can easily be extended to any race. Such a character can:
* Pilot all T1 frigates, all T1 destroyers, all T1 industrials (for a lot of options when buying a cyno ship).
* Has 3 jumpclones.
* Only needs an Auxillary Power Core to use a rookie ship with a cyno generator (modules are easier to haul than ships, and rookie ships don't show on killboards).
* Can use a cloak, AB, MWD, T2 expanded cargohold, salvager (mosueover useful for checking structure range).
* Can use a probe launcher to travel through w-space or check gates for hostiles when travelling.

Thanks for all that. I hadn't noticed the two different cyno gennies. Much appreciated.
