So I have never actually seen anyone test lighting cyno's in wormholes or try jumping to them. I just figured it is either due to hard coded mechanics or players not knowing where systems are in relation to each other.
Recently I found this document by a guy who actually mapped out the wormhole systems and found their position in relation to new eden and other wormholes. Here is a link to the document here: http://evetravel.files.wordpress.com/2012/04/project-compass-2-0-preliminary-analysis.pdf

Perhaps if someone had a capital ship in a wormhole nearby one of these mapped wormholes then they can test if jump drives will function in wormhole space.

would such knowledge be a can of worms best left unopened?

You cant cyno into a WH, you can light one in a hole and will show up on overview and you can warp to it from anywhere in system like normal but nothing can jump to it.

Does it just say "No, your dumb" or does it say something about not being in range

I'd be suprised if anyone (outside of maybe devs) have even actually tried it between 2 wormholes in range but as far as I know it doesn't work.

Jumping between systems in range has been tried (by Aquila if I recall correctly), and you're simply unable to.

Technically, even being able to light the cyno was considered an exploit under Apocrypha, but no one cares these days.

You are all focusing on the cyno part of this. If you read the whole document, you realise there is a man, probably in his middle age, living in his mother's basement somewhere in the northern hemisphere, with cheetos-dust rash under his neckbeard, crying softly over his slide rules because no one of the female persuasion talks to him. So he did all this math, and wrote a massive document, RP-style, and showed proof in the appendices and everything.

Can someone show him some love?

His mother and the voluptuous sci fi geek supermodel karma bestowed love him.

Actually he's a lawyer in Chicago and author of an excellent blog called EVE Travel, which catalogs all the landmarks of New Eden. Highly recommended.

Didn't work.

If it did I'd be setting up a jump bridge network to maximize alliance gas mining ops.
