Idea to simplify POS transition

Greetings All,

I was driving to work this morning and was thinking a bit about EvE and this idea hit me. Seems like an OK idea, but who knows.

I have heard the devs comment that the transition from old POS to new POS will be an issue. Here is an idea that might simplify that process.

What if the new POS's were like ships and they had high, med, and low slots as well as a new slot called a "core" slot.

The existing POS items could then become modules for the new POSs.

You could place an existing control tower in the POS core slot to determine it's base charactersitics (power, cpu, hp, etc.)

You could place existing Corporate Hangar Arrays, Ship Maintance arrays, etc into the low slots to add offices, cargo capactiy, etc. to the new POS.

You could place existing assemply arrays, labs, etc to medium slots to give factory and lab slots of various types.

You could place weapons and defensive structures into high slots to give the new POS attack and defense capabilities.

This way all the existing items and their production and markets could be intact and be immediatly used for the new system.

Anyway just an idea. Thanks for listening.

The real issues are most likely technical - it would require extensive knowledge of the underlying source code to know the real issues and potential solution. For example one of the problems with POSes are roles in general. But since they are so deeply integrated into POS code and various other code, changing stuff will most likely break a lot of other things. That for example is why the transition will be difficult.

Thanks for the effort though!

POS really needs some love, yes. I like your idea also. Seems to simplify things.

Oh, and you know, if you think of EVE while you in rl better u take a couple of days off!:D (kidding)

And no, the basic idea would not be very modular or extendible. It sounds like a cheap re-use code kind of thing, that neither conceivable be feasible, nor would it be extendible or flexible enough to actually allow to do the things we need POSes for.

I wonder if it would be doable to just have both old and new posses able to be used at the same time. A grandfathering of sorts, where there can no longer be any old style posses anchored but the ones in place will continue to be usable for a time.
This would allow people to decommission old posses after any jobs finish etc and set up the newer style in its place. Not sure if technically it is feasible but it sure makes sense.

this is the system CCP ahs talked about,s icne there woudl LITERALLY be no way in programming existence to successfully convert one code-system to another without stopping the first code-system.

this woudl eman offlining/unanchoring ALL POS's and doing something with the modules, as they no longer exist sicne the old code is gone.

which is why the grandfathering system would be done.

they did the same thing with POS fuel when we moved to blocks, while this would be a little more complex, it would achieve the same goal.

This is probably the best way a POS replacement system could work.

In regards to jobs finishing, CCP has it easily within their grasp to look at the database of jobs, filter out any that aren't at POSes, announce that the change will be done a week/two weeks/three weeks after whatever that date is (giving everyone more than ample time to take things down, etc etc) and impose a denial of installing new jobs which would go past the end date of the current longest job.

To illustrate more clearly:

Out of all the jobs in all the POSes of New Eden, the currently-existing longest job as of downtime is scheduled to end (let's be arbitrary for a moment) on March 31st. CCP implements a restriction so that any new jobs which would go past that date can no longer be installed (meaning jobs installed on March 28th would have to finish by the 31st or be rejected) while another department posts up a dev blog announcing that the POS transition is set for April 15th so get your jobs delivered, empty your corp hangars and get your structures out of space.

It may or may not happen like this, but I can see it as one possible way.

The easiest way for a transition is probably to keep all old Towers and mods and only disable their anchoring functions.

This way everybody can slowly replace everything at their own schedule.
