Here

Just watched it and I am willing to say that it might be this generations blade runner. How Zero dark Thirty got nominated ahead of this for things like best film and editing is beyond me.

In my "experience" with acquaintances that didn't like it, their most frequent gripe was that "it was hard to follow" (?WHAT?) or that "it was boring" (what.)
SERIOUSLY ?
I'm betting people who didn't like it have next to no chance of liking any Doctor Who episode that involves more than the initial/final time jump.
Do people really need to get spoon-fed story in a single continuous yarn to be able to enjoy stuff ?
Oh well.

I personally freaking loved it overall, and I even saw the necessity of the slightly less exciting parts too.
The wife also loved it, but I guess me prepping her on what to generally expect helped a bit.
I sadly don't know many people who have both seen and liked it though (those that I expect to like it don't really have much time for movies anymore.

I guess it's just the usual reason : people are kinda' stupid on average :P

i think the clear answer is most of the academy is American.

Because the Academy remembers the other Wachowski Siblings (they are not 2 brothers anymore) film "Speed Racer".

Intelligent movies rarely test well... Roll

Tell someone you love them today, because life is short. But scream it at them in Esperanto, because life is also terrifying and confusing.

In high school (1982) me and a few friends saw "Blade Runner" 5 times in the theater....to otherwise empty theaters. And I mean E.M.P.T.Y.

We were even made fun of that fall once school started up again. BUT, we forced our AP English class to watch it on videotape during finals week when we had nothing to do. Yes, ridiculed again.

Skip 10 years to my Class Reunion. No less than 6 people came up to me apologizing for their "Blade Runner" behavior and went on and on about how it was one of their favorite films.

Some things just take time.

Oh, if only. But then I would not have had the education that I did, that much is for sure.

I never saw this because I heard nothing but bad things about it. Yet you are comparing it to Blade Runner. So either it was horribly misunderstood or I am being trolled into watching a ****** movie. X

It's fantastic. Unfortunately, people's uneducated minds can't handle 6 storylines at once in this sad day and age.

They say they didn't like it because they actually had to focus massive attention on it.

Well - the trailer, and it was a trailer that actually explained a bit of what was gonna happen (for once)

was epic.... and my juices flow.

No spoilers please. However whats being said here just puts it on next weeks to-do list.
In fact its nice to hear criticism of an audience that cannot comprehend the depth of the movie rather than criticism from an audience that can. (for once)

I actually liked Cloud Atlas slightly more.
Then again, I was watching the 1080p version in the peace and quiet of my own chair Lol

This is not an action movie. It's a sometimes visceral but usually visually stunning journey through the underbelly of society across past, present and future periods.
There are very few "plot twists", and even those are somewhat predictable if you know anything about human nature ; also, there's quite enough hints during the movie so that you can actually figure them (the "twists") out before they're very quickly presented to you.
Even if you read all the possible spoilers, it wouldn't really make the first viewing much less enjoyable, unless you really, really, REALLY wanted to figure the few unusual bits of quasi-plot-twists before they happen.

Reminds me of a TV show ("Do No Harm") that I sort of liked which was recently canceled after just two episodes... and that one had just two narrative lines (and the secondary one was fairly short), not six plus one.
Personally, I found it quite easy to follow all six interwoven stories, even spot quite a few of the "blink and you'll miss it" references across time periods (like the button necklace, for instance) in the first viewing.
Then again, what can you expect from the average flighty audience that needs to have something shoved repeatedly and directly into their face to not be completely surprised about what happened.

Let me put it this way...
This last Twilight movie made nearly 900 mil at the box office, but I had absolutely no trouble at all "following" it in a corner of my screen (with my wife watching it on her laptop in the other room, the only reason why I was "kind of" watching it) while talking at length on my phone with my parents and assembling a components list for a PC for my niece as a combined birthday present from my parents and her parents.
On the flip side, Cloud Atlas barely broke 100 mil, but there were times when a 10 second slight distraction while I explained something about what just happened in the movie to my wife meant having to rewind, because I already missed something important and stuff stopped making complete sense.

In other sad news the worst reviewed movie of the year so far "Identity Thief" just held the #1 spot for a 2nd weekend.

http://insidemovies.ew.com/2013/02/24/box-office-report-identity-thief-snitch/

Here is the horrible trailer.

....and a review.

By the fourth or fifth time, well, you begin to wonder if this is the only arrow these guys have in their quiver. The answer is yes, I'm afraid."

Nic Cage just needs to.....................stop.

Please, someone make him STOP.

His early career brilliance is being replaced with the image of a buffoon.

In the past 20 years the only good has been "Leaving Las Vegas" and "Adaptation". (I consider "Face Off" half good and half bad).

That "Wicker Man" remake.....(shudder). Could qualify for MST3K.

otrc.com/live is a live stream of the red carpet live for another 30 mins...

I skipped the superbowl, but I'm going to catch the oscars.

some of the interviews are painful to watch--they should keep it simple with something like, "what are you wearing" or "what's on your mind?" these interviewers are posing some complicated questions that make responses superficial. why is the interviewer doing all the talking?

would be even better if one of the interviewers would give the mic to the actors without a word, and let them lead the conversation. might make for some good teevee. impromptu is sorta their thing, or so i've heard

plus actors are vain and they want to be recognized for things other than acting, so I think actors would put some effort into something like an ad-lib reverse interview

I did not meet nic cage in an elevator in Vegas where I give him his privacy by acting like a normal stranger, which did not prompt him to turn to me and ask, "do you know who I am?" to which I replied,"uhh, you're nicholas cage." and he did not invite me to hang out and he did not call a "paid entourage" and we definitely did not attempt to out drink each other.
