Tengu, from my experience, was (not so sure now) one of the top Five mission boats to use (pve). With the recent missile nerf/buff/whatever it really isn't so much any more.

The Proteus gets raves from many as a great PVP boat, but I don't have any experience with the Proteus in PVP (I'm averse to using a 1bil isk boat in pvp). I'm sure there's plenty of threads out here on Proteus PVP if you just use the Search function.

What you're basically asking is what is the difference between a drake and a brutix. If you can answer that question, you can answer you OP question.

Well, it's not the only cloaky C3 that can pump over 500 dps, even Tengu can do that. But it's the only thing with a covert ops cloak doing over 650 dps with 120K+ EHP.

Train both ships or buy character.

Im gonna tell you something I was told early on in my EvE career:

If you dont know, then you arent ready to fly either one.

Its not that hard to figure out things yourself and while asking is also a lot better than "permanoob" its still correct that you shouldnt fly ships you dont understand.

Though in this case one can probably sum it up with Tengu for pve and Proteus for pvp.

T3 cruisers such as the proteus and tengu are long term goal for you atm. As you already noticed, I refered to them as T3. The ship you fly are mostly t1. They are pretty versatile and forgiving. On the other hand ships such as t2 and t3 are not. They require you to fit them for one specific purpose where they will excel.

To give you an exemple, let's have a look at the proteus. The proteus is a t3 which plenty of different subsystems. Let say we want to fit it as a very heavy tackler. We will choose the augmented armor defensive subsystem, the localized injector propulsion subsystem and the electronic friction grav whatever.
Those 3 subs will provide you with a good defensive setup and a longer range point. So you can tackle this poor pilot and stay on the field close to him long enough for your buddies to blast him away.

If you ever wanted to do the same with a tengu, well you do have an equivalent subsystems that will increase your shield buffer tank but it will be inferior to the proteus and there just isn't a subsystems that will increase your point range.

So far, I pointed out that ship can be designed to fit specific niche. The next thing is that the t3 are supposed to be quintessence of their racial specialties. You must look at the t3 as mix between the recon and hac ship.

Gallente's recon specialties is increased range for points. Hence the gallente t3 has a subsystem for that. On the other hand, the caldari are specialized in ecm and so the tengu has a subsystems for that. ( I have rarely seen ecm tengu, just saw one loss for an armor tanked ecm tengu, go figure...).

So once again, t3 are specialized and so what the other tried to point out with more or less subtlety is that if you don't know what you want to do with them, you will get frustrated when you can fly them. Flying a t3 is a long term investment and just realizing that you trained for a ship you have no use for is really uncool.

Proteus excels at a specific niche of pvp, that's cloaky gank. It's the solo roamer's boat. The only way to both solo and win these days. If you select your targets well, you will never lose it.

Fit it any other way, and you'll soon run into the typical blasterboat issues. I wouldn't fit it as a "heavy tackler." Cheap boats do better for less and without the SP loss.
