Worm vs. Hookbill

I <3 my Hookbill. It's a cool looking ship and it's fun to fly. I initially skipped training Destroyers and Cruisers, as I was able to run L1, L2, and even some L3 missions in my Hookbill...and I'm still fairly new (about 2m SP).

I've been fascinated with the Worm (I like faction ships, what can I say?), mostly because everyone says it's crap. I finally played around with fitting one in EveHQ today and I was surprised to find that with my current skills, I can fit the same DPS as my Hookbill, with quite a bit more tank.

Additionally, when I adjusted my skill levels, the Worm gains noticeable improvements in DPS over the Hookbill as skills improve. So I'm just curious...why all the hate for the Worm, or am I missing something?

You've been talking to noobs who only know how to fly simple brawler and tackler frigs. Worm's got drones, buffer, and an excellent resist profile. It's not the fastest frig out there, but overall, pretty good.

And what's this about running L3s in a Hookbill?

In a word, utility. DPS and EHP aren't the only comparison.

The thing with the Hookbill is the 5 mids and generous fitting stats mean you can run some truly nasty setups.
I've seen tanky twin MASB brawler fits, twin TD fits, twin web fits, even twin/triple damp fits. Range dictation is key with #most# frigate combats, and the Hookbill gives you a plethora of options to achieve complete range dictation while having a capless, damage selectable (although kinetic biased) weapon system.
The worm is by no means a bad ship, but it falls far short of the Ishkur in the performance for the price and nowadays doesn't seem a worthwhile upgrade on the Tristan.

It's the end of the world as we know it and I feel fine.

What he said AND price efficiency.

You cannot ignore the argument for 'bang for buck'.

If Daredevils were all the price of a Comet, guess which one we all would rather fly.

Only, in that analogy the DD is CLEARLY a superior ship - the Worm happens to be 'similar' and arguably worse than the Hookbill at 5x the cost.

That's the problem.

Ya, I can understand that. Especially when you can purchase a Battlecruiser for about the same price as the Worm. I don't know that I would even attempt to PvP in a 50m+ frigate. Still, it has it's perks...including the large tank and ability to apply a lot of drone dps while neuted or otherwise locked down. As for the Hookbill, it speaks for itself. It may just be one of the best T1 frigates in my opinion.

I was just curious about the Worm, really. I don't ever see anyone flying it or even talking about it. Any time I've ever brought it up, everyone just says it's overpriced and basically worthless. I got lucky and found one on contract for 15m the other day and jumped on it with the intention to just flip it and make a quick profit. As it turns out, it's a lot of fun to fly.

OP is clearly discussing the Worm from a PvE perspective.

Worm can be really fun ship to run missions with, however with the NPC crazy hate against drones you´ll be loosing too much drones and fun will turn into frustration.

I hope CCP fixes that problem.

You can see when your drones are taking damage, simply scoop them up when they are losing shields and re-deloy them, they will loose aggro.

I actually still have a couple of Worms left over from my FW days. It was great for small and medium plexes before they removed the multiple rats per wave (yeah, it's a more expensive Ishkur, but it could still go intp plexes the Ishkur couldn't), and it was pretty nice at long-distance damage projection when properly fit out. It's no longer really cost-effective, though, now that there's not just the Ishkur, but also the Tristan, the Algos, and the Dragoon for small-ship drone combat.

The last time I took one into combat, I ended up tangling with a pair of Thrashers across several plexes, and they only finally managed to take me down by landing a scram due to bad positioning on my part in the third plex...

I wuv my kiting worm, until I meet someone that knows how to shoot drones :(

Still, it looks cool and no one expects a worm that goes PEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOWWWWWWWWWWWWWWWWWWWWWNNNNNNNNNNNNNNNNNNNGGGGGGGGGGGGGG across the screen and into the distance.
