what class ship for exploration

I'm looking at trying my hand at exploration and I'm a little confused at what size ship to use. I keep reading that you want a covert ops to scan it down then a T3 to run it or something of the sort. I can't fly or afford T3 at all. I can however competently fly almost anything else (ship skill....definitely not player skill.) I read somewhere though that sites limit what size ship you can bring in but i haven't been able to figure out what size they're limited to.

So long story short if i'm looking for a cheap all in one explorer (for high sec right now until I get my head out of my arse enough to know what i'm doing) can I use a battlecruiser, or is cruiser the max size for most sites, or frigate?

It depends on what you're looking for:

Highsec Radar: Exploration Frigate is probably your best bet.

Highsec Combat: Any combat cruiser with a spare high slot for a probe launcher will work. Assault ships can also work for 3/10 and equivalent, but might struggle in 4/10 without high skills.

Unrated sites may or may not have equivalent gate restrictions.

Sites are gated by DED level:
DED 1/10: Frigates
DED 2/10: Frigates and Destroyers.
DED 3/10: Cruisers and smaller
DED 4/10: Battlecruisers and smaller.
DED 5/10: Battleship or smaller.

Also it's not Covert Ops frigate for probing and then running it with a T3.

It's...

1.) Probe it with Covert Ops frigate (because of bonuses to scanning) and then run it with ANOTHER ship (because it can actually do good DPS / Tank).

OR

2.) Use a T3. As these can be set up to be a prober and yet have a tank and some DPS.
