My main character I am training to be a specialist explorer/covert ops type. I have also, due to my research, decided to put a few points into mining skills. Not a full on hulk pilot or anything, but just for when I find a juicy gravimetric site. My alts I am not really going to train too much, just have one for light hauling duty's and one for price checking. That gives a bit of background and so to my query.

I have been looking for a more long term goal to have and I spent some time looking at the Orca. I have read some guides like the Eve Uni one and a few other forum posts. But I have not seen anyone that "mains" with one. Is this because you pretty much sit in the belts reading the forums or twiddling your thumbs if it is your main character? I kind of like the idea of playing a support character. I know this is not anything like theme-park MMO's where you have the trinity but in those MMO's I have always played support it kind of fits my personality. So is the Orca a boring thing and simply used, as I have read, as a big jet can and I would be bored. If I wanted to support an industrial type of corp.., but not be a miner, would I be better training to use a different ship like a logistics ship or simply haul for the miners?

Sorry that's alot of questions with alot of "if's and buts"
Any help would be appreciated.

p.s. I am only going to run one account. I know many have lots of account but I do not feel that is for me so "supporting myself" is not what I want.

I feel that the Orca is the perfect boat for an alt.

He can fly my ships where I need them and hang thumbs a twiddling. Cloaked if in a WH/low sec/null.

I'm afraid I don't use it for mining. Someone else might be better suited to speak on that.

The Orca is a bit more than just "a big jet can." It's basically a logistical support vessel (not to be confused with Logistics Frigates/Cruisers) that can carry fitted ships, mods, allow ships to refit themselves on the fly, provide gang boosts (better shields, mining bonuses, etc), and/or... if fitted properly... can provide minimal remote repair at close range.

It's basically a small "all-in-one" mobile HQ.

All that said... yes, the Orca is a "sitter" type ship and you will get bored. BUT... that doesn't mean you should cross it off from your list of things to train. Just train up other things that will be useful in the short term and then train it up when you find a need for it (ex. moving your hanger around from location to location).

You've more or less got it. The Orca doesn't really do much on its own, it's a hard support/utility vessel that provides fleet buffs, a ship bay, and some mobile station functions. It's primarily for mining, but the ship bay makes it reasonably useful with an alt character for people that just don't want to deal with the logistics of storing and selling stuff through stations when they're exploring.

The only reason I'd train them on your main is if you're in a hardline mining corporation that does mining ops basically continuously, or if you want the ability to steal them on the off chance you come across one floating untended by a POS or something (rare, since most orca pilots are dedicated alts that fly nothing else). It's only really adjacent to your main skill lines if you're otherwise training for capital ships and mining ships.

Wait for summer expansions so it is a 2 week train rather than 2 months.

This!

As others have said, the Orca is a mobile HQ. When I used to run three accounts I had a miner/explorer, Orca pilot, and Miner/combat support toon. We'd roam the stars looting Grav sites for weeks and made nice hauls.

Like you i only use one character and i can fly both Orca and whatever mining ship you prefer. At one point i did have a second character, but due to having a computer that hates running two accounts, and my main being able to do basically everything my alt could do and simply not needing it anymore..well here i am!

I find it useful to have one character that can cover several roles, weather its being the Orca pilot, the miner, the logistic pilot, a full scale mission runner or trader. It allows me to do/fly what i want when im in the mood for it (or the need arises) without having to worry about getting a second character on and making sure its in the appropiate area, have the needed ships and so on.

Granted im also fortunate because i already have all the skills i want. which is a problem you might run into which most likely will cause you to think "Arg! I wish i had an alt right now!". You might want to consider getting an alt for now, and then at a later point when you feel your main is skilled in the areas you KNOW you want to do, you can simply just stop paying for your alt.

So, i would say you can easely aim your self towards and Orca, but dont make it your "only" goal. Allow your self the freedom to change professions when you want and dont tie your self down to one thing. It might take a week before your tired of being the Orca pilot, it might take 6 months, but it will happen. Being an Orca pilot is not "fun" on its own.. what makes it a good role is who your spending time with while piloting it.
In other words.. Its a great ship when all you want to do is idle on TS while listen to drunken corp members rant Lol
