I've recently been getting back into Diablo 2 and Starcraft 2, ( man cannot live by Eve alone heh), and got a warning when logging into their forums that I wasn't secure. Blizzard run an Authenticator one time code stamp system, like a bank they have the Username, Password and a generated number code that lasts around 30 seconds or so generated by the authenticator.

I'd seen these thigs cost around £10 each, but I have the software on my phone now for free.

I would propose that CCP uses a similar system to minimise account losses, every bit of security helps and I'm actually impressed Blizzard goes to these lengths. I would wager that the majority of the Playerbase has a smartphone already so it would likely be a piece of security coding.

Just a thought.

If I understand correctly.. ..you try to log in, then the server sends a code to your phone and you have to enter it in?

Can't people just be responsible with their account information instead?

No, theres a one time setup for the program on my phone, keeping it running it has a code that changes every 30 seconds or so which is required to login, presumably the programs being run at their end too and if they match up, you get let in.

And why can't you do both?

Afaik CCP are working on it and IIRC the last fanfest there was a presentation about it. It would be great and im sure they are working on the "single signon"

At the last fanfest, CCP gave out their version of the authenticator to those that attended. Not sure when it'll be up and running, but AFAIK, it's on it's way.

If it's optional, then that's well and good. Let the people who want to use it do so.

If it's mandatory, then this becomes a problem.
