Explorers Role

What exactly does an explorer play a role in? I am not a "new citizen" by any means, but it is a noob like question. What do they do? How do they make isk? What type of ship do they fly? What skills are basic for an explorer, and what modules do they use?

I am interested in this job, but I need some background knowledge.

They use scanning probes to find strange and rewarding sites in space.

Generally any of the T1 scanning frigates work well for starters, with long-term goals towards covert ops frigates and deep space scanning probes.

Take a look at the exploration guides here for more in-depth info:

For probing, you need all the skills with the word "Astrometrics" in the skillname. And a ship that has bonuses to scanner strength (frigate, cov-ops, or T3 cruiser with the strength component).

For the sites, you need a PVE combat ship, or a group of combat ships (depending on where you are). High-sec = cruiser typically, low-sec HAC/T3 cruiser or a group of them, etc.

For wormhole space exploration and living, google some wormhole guides.

I had the same question and did a bit a digging, mostly because text responses don't do so well at actually giving you a feel for it.

First off, exploration is a major source of two things. Industry/research components and skill books, coming mostly from Mag and Radar sites, and Faction blueprints and modules, coming mainly from DED Combat Sites.

Mag sites may require a salvager or an analyzer module (usually both), while Radar sites require a Hacking module. Combat sites require combat.

All sites must be scanned down using probes. A bonused probe ship is not required, but will speed things up. It may be wise to pick a low traffic region of ship and stash both a PvE combat ship, and a scanning ship in that area. Scan down the sites, bookmark them, switch to your combat vessel, and blow them apart.

Both the Pilgrim and the Ishtar appear to be popular exploration ships. All T3s can be very capable exploration ships for high sec and low sec from what I've read. I've also seen Drakes and other battlecruisers used.

I suggest you check out the Explorer's Log on this youtube page as it has some examples of Exploration! http://www.youtube.com/user/JonnyPew/videos?view=1&flow=grid

This is the best resource I have found.

I also have chosen to specialise in this profession. So far in about 2 hours I have found a Blue print copy for the black ops micro warp drive. and lots of stuff I don't know what is used for yet. All in about 10 million isk worth for two hours work. I fully expect this to go much faster when I skill up more.
I can tell you that it is a great fun profession. It is complicated and very stimulating. Worth the effort to work it out.

When I go exploring I sell the grav bookmarks to some of the local mining corps. Nice little side income.

I do approve this attitude.

Exploration isn't the lame, brainless mining or mission running, you have to think you have to do stuff yourself.
But it CAN pay out pretty awesome if you get lucky.

You would have been better to have given me the 500,000,000 ISK It would have actually done some good instead of putting into a bounty no-one will ever claimShocked if you truly have so much ISK to burn send it this wayBear

Hmz...you're the first bounty ever...been posting and chatting in EVE for over 2 years...maybe it's the type of stuff you do that make people place bounties.

And you don't have to post with your main to get people to know who it is. People posting with alts will sometimes say things that link that alt to their main, specially when they are raging or complaining about stuff.

I'm still less than two months in-game so please bear with me. How do you 'stash' multiple ships? Currently I have nearly all my ships (other than a couple of rookies ships acquired from being unlucky/stupid) in my original station. It's not all that crowded but when I want to change ships for a mission or activity I have to fly from where I am, back to where my ship is.

Can you explain this procedure in 'for dummies' mode?

Well you can do what I did back in the day and dedicate some time to moving all your ships to where you want them, or you can sell them, or pay to have them shipped.

If you move a ship to a station (secondary station) where you have no other ships, how do you get back to your primary station to get another ship?

Either fly back in a shuttle or exit your ship and go back in your capsule. Shuttles can be purchased in the majority of systems even if it's not the exact station you are in. Again, just exit your main ship, and fly in your pod to the station selling the shuttles. Don't forget that all four racial shuttles are available in a lot of systems so you shouldn't have to travel far.

If your main ship has a large enough capacity, bring a shuttle or two with you for you to fly back in.
