Are alts required?

Alts are great if you want 1 highsec character and 1low/sec character (or 1 char with positive sec standing and one with negative sec standing).

Or industry alts are very popular too, for 10 extra manufacturing/research jobs.

Also... quite useful when you're by yourself and you have to jump through low-sec, you can use your alt to scout and not lose your expensive ships on your main.

Is this actually required to get total enjoyment out of the game? Is it not possible to just have one character and focus on it?
Do the majority of players have alts?

Stricly speaking, you can just go with one character and EVE will play fine for many casual players.
Beyond that, you'd need at least 2 accounts (which translate into 6 characters) to get the best play out of EVE. Think parallel.

Long ago CCP released stats that the average accounts PER player is 2 (sorry, I cba to dig the reference).
I'd say most players you interact with will have alts .. give or take from the average.

P.S EVE Online is synonymous to Alts Online. The metagame revolves heavily around it.

No they aren't.
Just play your character and develop it.

Don't believe morons who come up with the "jack of all"-bullshit who can't do anything right.
There's a levelcap for each skill and they even with alts, nobody can learn (player experience)
several things at once.

Alts just make the game easy.

I play with one character. Exclusively. I feel alts are a way to make up for a lack of friends, or the ability to make them. While I might not be as competative solo in terms of PvP, trading and ISK farming, I can do a lot of stuff on a single character and can cash in on many different oppurtunities. I don't feel like I need an alt, I enjoy spending as much time as possible on this character interacting with people that complement my skill and playstyle. In terms of fun I'm not missing out or anything.

True, but having some kind of alt shows you can handle independence when **** hits the fan and you have no one to rely on which did happen to me once unfortunately. You get kicked out of a corp, alliance disbands, the awesome friend you made during your noob days quits eve out of nowhere; Basically people do come and go, but for example that cyno alt you own can ninja evacuate your carrier out of 0.0 to lowsec and it will always stay with you.

Having a well developed main has the same effect IMO. I reckon dependence on one another is part if the game design and pretty much the developer's intent. I'd rather embrace those mechanics instead of using an alt. While valid points are being made and ships like JF/Carrier needs Cyno support, I'll simply not use those ships if I can't get that type of support from other players. Should that mean that I lose a ship when **** hits the fan, so be it. I can live with those risks.

Try moving capitals solo or owning a Super without any alts...

Alts make the game easier, safer and more profitable, and if you plan your alt account right it pays for it self.

You need to make sure you can generate as much passive income as possible, good PI skills and research agents on all 3 characters helps. Trade, production and research/invention can also generate profits with a minimum time investment.

Once you have trained the needed skills on each character you can pick one and train for scout, cyno, capital babysitter, whatever.

Alts make the game easier.

Friends make the game easier and have the added benefit of you not having to talk to yourself all the time.

De'Veldrin's Corollary (to Malcanis' Law): Any idea that seeks to limit the ability of a large nullsec bloc to do something in the name of allowing more small groups into sov null will inevitably make it that much harder for small groups to enter sov null.

No, alts are not required and one can play with a single character.

Further, clothing is not required and one can play EVE naked. Big smile

Loss is meaningful. Therefore is the loss of meaning likewise meaningful. It is the source of all trolling.

Unless playing in high sec, even then, once someone used an alt and understood the advantages of having one can admit have an alt account in Eve is not really an option. -hence the name "alts on line" from some other communities.

I know only one character can train skills per account, I assume that also means only one character per account can be logged in at a time so to be most useful you need a second account right?

They are useful as I only trust a handful of people in eve I like to do my own logistics. Plus if you do the job yourself you know it's being done right rather than twiddling your thumbs wondering if the corp/alliance mate has done/started it yet. Also they side step wardecks very nicely if you keep them in the starter corps. So very useful but not required to play eve.

Nope. They help, and Eve is definitely an easy game to multibox in, but they're not required at all. I've never had more than one and I usually don't have any.

you need at least 1 alt account in this game.

if not for a hauler, a scout, a cyno, etc

nothing says you can't use your second account to train chars for sale and make some profit off it in the meantime.

They're not required but when you have low SP but plenty of iskies then it can be worthwhile training up an alt for a different purpose on Power of Two/Sidekick/wtf they're calling it these days.

The trick is recognising the point at which you should transfer the alt to your main account rather than getting used to two accounts or you're off down the rabbit hole with Power of 2 Squared and... you get the idea ;)

Cyno alts are a must, at the very least 2 for moving supers and caps around so yes you need them.

I have more free money than I have free time so it makes sense for me to pay for two accounts and do things in parallel. But my main can do everything my alt can do, and I could continue all my activities on only one character starting tomorrow if I so wished.

Convenient, depending on your playstyle, but certainly not essential.

Was it CCP or the playerbase who developed the 1 combat ship and 3 falcon alt style of 'Solo PvP'?

Since the cessation of their usefulness is imminent, may I appropriate your belongings?

Playerbase developed it, CCP just cashed in it. But in their defense, why they hell wouldn't you cultivate a business model where the customer pays 4 times (or whoever bought the PLEX they used)?

I just hope EA never learns about this...
