I have played off and on over the last year with probably 3 or 4 months in-game. And a couple nights me and a buddy did our first really evil thing. We do not consider ourselves to be good at the game to be honest just pretty much average. So here's the story.

The other night a friend and me joined a mining corporation with the intention to kill a couple hulks. We managed to talk them into bringing out their orca and go on a big mining operation. It seemed most were newer than even me. Anyhow we waited till they were all nice and cozy and jumped in on 0 and scrambled them all, I believe it was a retriever and a venture along with the orca. (We may have jumped the gun early and came in before everyone else was there.) During the attack there was pretty much nothing that they could do and to be honest it felt really.. Empty. We tried to ransom him but to be honest I think he just bought it because he had pretty much no fittings and he came from about 16 jumps out and that's right around a trade hub, he did not appear to have much money left.

So we popped it, and afterwards I was hoping they would freak out and make me feel a little better about doing this to them because in my mind if they were assholes back it was justified. Anyhow no tears were shown they didn't even respond really. They just sat there and watched us kill the orca in the pods while the orca pilot asked them to protect him. After we finished the orca off the other pilots flew off and we left the corp.

Hoping they would send mails to make me feel better about being such an *******, they didn't though the next morning I did have a 5 mil bounty. So does anyone else feel this bad after doing this stuff? Honestly I have no problem killing them I think it was just the way we went about it, pretending to be new and completely coming out of nowhere to blow them up.

I am fine with killing people in lowsec, that is there own problem for coming there, but in all honesty I think this is the first and last time I will be doing something like this. If I had the money to replace the orca I probably would. Alas, I am broke though.

Idk tell me your stories.

Edit: oh yes, before killing them they were all talking nonstop and they seemed so excited that there small corp seemed to be picking up a lot of new members. And I just feel like I killed that for them. Forgot to add that in.

Feel bad because of pixels on a screen? Hardly.

Feel bad to trying to drive a player to commit suicide while speaking on-stage at a gaming get-together?

Oh, right sorry... can't talk about that here.

Well more or less it was just the excitement they seemed to have for their corp. I don't know I feel I ruined it for them.

I've played full loot PvP games for a while and I have never been able to see past my own conscience to do something like that.
Seriously, I just couldn't do it - and if I found myself in a situation where I had, I would be compelled to "fix" it.

Killing people, even newbs in LS is all well and good, they shouldn't be there! But purposely luring newbs for a gank that they will find difficult to replace or even have the will to try...
You have not only ripped the heart of what sounded like a good night for the newbs, but you have probably stolen the life out of this game for them.

You say you don't feel bad killing them in lowsec because it's their fault if they go there.

I don't feel bad killing them in EvE because it's their fault if they go there.

If you feel bad about it, apologise to them, and suggest that they are more careful with their recruitment policy in future. Ganking unsuspecting people is not for everyone, but it is part of the game. From the lack of tears I'd say they actually came out on top, you were denied the satisfaction that comes from them.

In the beginning there was nothing, which exploded.

The moment you take away accountability, the only thing left to govern one's actions is their own integrity.

I would say you passed.

It's completely different when the person isn't an ******* or is clearly sorta new/doesn't understand. True it is still part of the game, but as somebody pointed out, let's not drive them to commiting suicide here.

I have had similar instances, where afterwards, I might send the person money/let them have what was left over after the explosion. Have even made long term friends that way.

I suppose I will see if I can contact them and give them a bit of isk, I am pretty poor myself. I guess I am not pirate material but that's alright I suppose I will just consider myself a pvper.

TBH, if you feel bad about this, you're either in the wrong line of work, or simply aren't bitter enough.

If the justification of, "I'm doing it for the money" will help you sleep at night, then find yourself another corp that has juicier targets (ie faction fit mission runners) to go infiltrate and kill. Otherwise, I'd suggest doing other parts of the game until you're callous enough (or bitter enough) to come back and continue the work of keeping Orca prices high.

Let me give you a different perspective. I lost my first battleship to pirate intervention. I had spent very nearly every isk I had on the thing and was taking it on missions in blatant disregard for the don't fly what you can't lose rule.

It got popped, and I was pissed. So pissed, and sad, and frustrated. I felt cheated, I felt insulted, and wronged. I gave this pirate no tears, because I knew that's what he wanted. He heard not a single peep from me.

That pirate is probably why I'm still playing this game. A couple of hours later, I realized "Holy crap, I just got that range of emotions out of a game." I can't ever quit now.

So yea, you might have wrecked their night, but you might also have made their game.

I actually just talked to the owner of the corp, and he pretty much confirms that they are still out there doing what they do. So maybe it wasn't so horrible. But I doubt I will be doing it again anyhow.

edit: Apologized and stuff. Though I did not repay him any isk. Perhaps in the future.

I had a similar experience with a hulk - outfitted to the max. In a 0.5 system next to a 0.4 system. Not aligned to station. Playing 2 accounts - a hauler and a miner. Someone came in and ganked and podded the hulk account but the hauler got away - with a ll the ore. I learned a lot from that experience and fly a lot safer in a tanked skiff not a hulk. So, in essence, the pirate did me a favor.

Wondering what the going exchange rate for gankee tears to (the much more rare) ganker tears is these days. I came expecting tears of frustration and got tears from regret. 6/10

I've got a soft spot for new players who are still trying to find their way. I was one of those guys and generally do what I can to NOT kill them, and prefer to try to steer them into the larger and more involving parts of the game. Besides that, the best targets aren't the ones who are just a few guys scraping by. The best targets are the ones who fancy themselves good at the game.

Besides, the moment they put an Orca on grid, they stop being "new" to me. To know what an orca is and have one available generally indicates you've been around long enough that you SHOULD know to screen your applicants. They've been given a hard lesson n the ways of Eve. Better they lose an orca now than a freighter or shiny mission ship later.
