What weapon style / race is for me? (Group PvP / Mission Running)

I am new to EVE but I am having a terribly hard time finding any info on what race of ship and weapon type to use for my style.

I like engaging at a distance IE Railguns, Artillery, Missiles. But I can't stand the looks of caldari ships. Most of the decent looking ships for any race are hybrids. I just cannot decide what's for me.

I came here looking for honest advise so please no smart remarks.

I hear Caldari are solid for mission running, missiles, or hybrids. But I am so torn because the ship models for missile boats are horrible.

Some of the minmatar ships look ok but it's not much better. I am more concerned with what's good in group pvp and which one would best fit my ranged long range style.

Thanks in advance.

There are 4 factions in the game.

There are two types of tanking : Armor and Shield.

There are 5 kind of weaponry system : Drones, Lasers, Missils, Hybrid and projectile.

Once you include pirate factions as well, you can pretty much mix every kind of weapon system with every kind of tanking.

Every race is solid when it comes to mission running, yet they will do it differently.

For exemple, the best mission running gallente ship is the dominix (armor/shield, hybrid/drones) while the caldari pilots usually fly missil ship with shield tanking.

You mention that you like to use long range weapon, but most of the time you will want to use long range weapon system for mission running because flying from a group to another is bad.

TL, DR : Pick whatever looks pretty.
You will cross train no matter what.

Long range weapons as a whole are used for group PVP. Solo PVP is (mostly) dominated by close ranged weapons as you have to be able to hold your target down which requires short-range modules.

Anyway, it depends on what kind of range you want. If you don't like Caldari, then Amarr would be my next pick. They have the longest-ranged short-range weapon system (Pulse lasers), and the shortest-range long-range weapon system (beam lasers). Beams and pulses are still both quite good, and offer more than enough range for most circumstances.

Artillery lacks either the range of railguns or the damage of lasers, but they offer high alpha (frontloaded damage), which gives Minmatar ranged ships sort of a unique role.

The Gallente lineup is focused on either drones or blasters depending on ship, neither of which are great ranged platforms.

So what were you saying about artillery? That did not make sense to me.

Artillery has a low rate of fire and high damage per hit.

The first shot is always "free", in that it takes 0 time to fire. Let's say you have one weapon system that does 200 damage once per second and another that does 1000 damage every 5 seconds. In 5 seconds, the first weapon system will have done 1200 damage. At t = 0, it will do 200 damage and then every second thereafter it will do 200.

The second weapon system will do 1000 damage at t= 0 and then another 1000 every 5 seconds thereafter. In 5 seconds, the weapon will fire twice dealing a total of 2000 damage. So, despite the fact that the two weapons do identical DPS, the second clearly does more actual damage and kills the target faster.

Artillery does mediocre DPS and has mediocre range, but has very high alpha (damage per hit). This means that it excels in short engagements and is worse at longer ones. You can form an entire fleet around this concept and use the combined alpha of the fleet to one or two-hit stuff.
