Just started my 14 day free trial and I can easily see the appeal to this game; cerebral, beautiful, relaxing AND intense, with a learning curve that makes advanced calculus seem like cat's cradle. Not saying it isn't surmountable, but gee wigglies is it dense! Character creation is top notch and the graphics in this game are stellar (no pun intended). The devs are to be commended. Actual gameplay: upon finally completing my lengthy introductory tutorials with Aura I took my first career assignment (explore space for anomalies) and it's here that I'm really getting a sense of just how vast this experience is. Well, that coupled with not being entirely sure what I'm doing, but that's all part of the journey, yes? It's probably because so many other games offer quick gratification, even on the more lengthier fetch quests etc, but it's apparent that EVE is truly a timesink of great magnitude, both by design as well as necessity. Do I like it so far? Yes, actually. Will I subscribe after my 14 day trial has expired? That remains to be seen, as I simply don't have oodles of free time -the kind of free time that this game necessitates- to dedicate to this, and as such can't see paying a monthly fee for something I'll be sporadically revisiting. I know that EVE is one of the few holdouts left that is using a subscriber platform as opposed to free-to-play, and I can appreciate their decision to do so. For a casual gamer like me, it's got me on the fence. But what a lovely, lovely fence it is. Still have a week and a half to make my determination, so we'll see just how deep this game gets its hooks into me. This will either be a bad thing or a good thing. Wish me luck.

Cool

Welcome to EvE.

The game doesnt actually *need* oodles of free time, and character afvancement - skill points - happens even when you're logged off, so it's entirely possible you could log on for an hour, tweak a skill queue and blow up a couple of rats, then log on again a couple of nights later and scan something out.

Oh, if you like scanning, its essentially the same process to scan out where other players are in the system, which can be used for anything from finding a mission runner for ninja salvaging, to finding where that enemy fleet went.

EVE is one of the very few gakes that has character progression that isnt really based on how much you log in.
Skills keep training even while not playing which means that if you have a 4 day long skill you can play for those entire four days ornot at all, the skill will take as long to train any way.

How ever the more time you put into the game the more you get out of it. The more you play the more you will understand game mechanics etc.

Some things in EVE do require a bit more time then others. But in the end even without a lot of time you can still play the game effectively cause its a sandbox where you on your own deside what to do and what your goals will be. This means your goals and playstyle can be totally tailored to your available time (for instance if you have very little time setting the goal to run a major null alliance would be unrealistic). In the end, EVE has a playstyle for ANYBODY, the first goal will be to find yours.

I've found that I can get a fair bit done in an hour or two in the evenings in highsec, Run a few missions, scan a constellation and do all the sites I find(or dont find). Or reset all my PI planets. You could even do some mining or manufacturing, if you're into that.

Hell with the way FW is now, you might be able to do that casually for a short time.

Thanks for the replies! I may take advantage of the 9.95 special (thirty day access plus a frigate) and see what's what. This game is growing on me the more I fool around with it, it's just a matter of justifying spending money on it on a monthly basis that prevents me (for now) from pulling the trigger. Will continue to explore and see... appreciate the feedback!

You can also buy time codes off people on the in game market with game currency to make the game a free-to-play experience. However acquiring enough isk to do so would require more then a casual time investment at least early on.

This.

Just a warning on that. Don't fall for the "I must PLEX my account" trap.

This will make you log in to grind ISK. Then buy a PLEX to extend your game for a month to grind more ISK. This will become very boring quickly.

The only correct way to play EVE Online is to have fun while playing it. Play it in any other way and you are playing it wrong. No matter who tells you otherwise.

EDIT:

To all NCQA residents...keep the good feedback rolling. I sense a great future in this person, let's get him hooked up with the EVE-virus.

The other thing you can do? If you aren't attached to that character, there's lots of people out there who would be happy to send you an invitation for a 21 day trial, and maybe even sweeten the deal for you when you subscribe out of the reward they get for getting a new player.

I wish I'd have known about that going in... it certainly looks like I've bonded with this character though, most likely to the point of no return. I guess I'm just sentimental like that. We've been through some intensive training together, learned how to pilot and navigate the cold reaches of space, stared in awe at the celestial goings on and sneered with pleasure as we blasted bandits into oblivion. I suspect the point of no return is closer than I think, and I also suspect that I'm okay with that.

Welcome to EvE...many new players think that the monthly subscription is somehow not viable for them. Quite honestly, it is one of the most underpriced value products in the world.

Even at $14.95 per month...that makes it roughly .02 cents per hour

Once you get your character established with lots of ISK which you can turn into PLEX to pay for your subscription...you can then save yourself the .02 cents per hour for other things that you want to spend RL money on like _____________?

Put it another way. A friend I work with (rather large man) once went to McDonalds and huffed down about $30 worth of food for lunch and dinner one day. We had a good laugh about it....but then I thought about it in EvE terms.

That guy ate enough to train and fly a HULK!

...don't let PLEX, ISK or a subscription ruin your fun. EvE IS worth it!!!

You make a fine point, and the more I explore the farther reaches and use the interfaces (HUD seems to be a little sparse with the info - LOLWUT) the more I seem to like it, even to the point of mildly obsessing over it during work hours (like now). Got four days off coming up and will dedicate some quality time to my skillsets whilst I continue curiously poking around to see what sort of trouble I can get in. Whole lotta space out there...

Welcome aboard Ms Serine. I hope you enjoy your stay :)
Think of this like chess - you've now learnt how the basic pieces move, but now you have to dive into the actual game to see how everything interacts.

Keep that sense of exploration and wonder, its what will make you go far in Eve!

And for what it's worth, based on my experience so far (in both the game and the social interactions) I think I can justify a subscription to this. Will play out my full two week trial, then jump on the 9.95 month to get a free frigate, and following that, pull the trigger for real.

Thanks to EVERYONE for your continued advice, guidance, and feedback to my queries and opinions. Good to know that support can be readily found when the need arises.

Looking forward to finishing this lousy shift so I can get back into the void and see what awaits!

The trial days don't get thrown away if you subscribe, so, rather than being constrained by "you can't train this ship or that ship or transfer money or blablabla with a trial account" you can probably subscribe right away, and have 30 days + the remainder of your 14 trial days with an unrestricted character.
