Tempest Fleet Issue or Maelstrom

Hello fellow Eve players, I have now got both large T2 Autocanon and T2 artillery , I am working on Minmatar Battleship level 5 as I write and i have very good shield tanking skills.

At the moment I am flying a Navy Megathron, with T2 weapons and Gallente BS lvl 5, I wish to dive into Matari boats and projectiles, something i have always wanted to do but felt compelled to at least complete the Gallente line up and not leave it half-baked. I have now done that.

As soon as I finish the Minimatar Battleship level 5 skill I am going to buy a Matari Battleship. At the moment I am considering either the Tempest Fleet Issue or the Maelstrom, the Tempest is the more expensive ship. But the Maelstrom has that shield bonus.

I know people will mention the Vargar and the Mach, but those are long term projects. Which one do you recommend? and which weapon system do i use?

Peaceful, calm & forever loving.

Use Mael until you can get the isk for a Mach. You already have all the skills for Mach, so don't bother with Vargur, as its performance is about the same/slightly lower than Mach.

Use AC.

A related follow-up question about ACs on a Mael: Will ACs have enough range for mission running (in general- I know there are a few missions where sniping is almost mandatory) on their own with just a couple of TEs or will it need a prop mod?

This has always been my concern, as sometimes my internet likes to go screwy. Because of that I tend to over-tank a bit just in case. On a six midslot shield tank like a Mael, I tend to run 3 hardeners, 2 booster amps, and a large booster. This obviously leaves no room for a prop. =P

This is correct.

You should drop one of the hardeners or one of the boost amplifiers and fit a propulsion module.

CCP should add more NPC 0.0 space to open it up and liven things up: the Stepping Stones project.

Start with artis but after you skill up I think you will prefer ACs.

As for mids, I liked XL Booster, Shield Boost Amp, 2 Hardeners, Heavy cap booster and 100mn AB. Once you get proficient and/or rich, get a Mach.

Slightly off topic, but I heard the Mach is getting its falloff nerfed... True?

Very likely true. However it will still have 3 bonuses and be far faster and more agile than the Mael.

Vargur and Mach are both great, I personally take the Vargur over the Mach, has more tank so I feel more secure and the tractor range bonus is very useful.

I'd keep 8x 1200mm guns in system, the 800mm acs work pretty well for a lot of missions but there are a few where I like having range too.

THey both have the same ROF bonus, so that cancels out.

At level 1
Maelstrom: 8 guns -> 8 effective guns
Fleet Pest: 6 guns, 1.05x bonus -> 6.3 effective guns
Clear advantage to the Mael

At lvl 5
Maelstrom: 8 guns/8 effective guns
Fleet Pest: 6 guns, 1.25x bonus -> 7.5 effective guns
-At this point, the 2 utility highs aren't coming at a major DPS cost

At all times, the Mael spits out more DPS, the Fleet pest will be slightly less costly on ammo (not an issue for arty, perhaps for autos if you use faction/T2 ammo)

The Mael also gives you more drone bandwidth (same drone capacity), and clearly its active tanking is better.

Mael wins on tank and DPS, Fleet pest wins on speed and utility highs, only at lvl 5

Fleet pest is underwhelming.
I've acquired all navy/fleet issue and pirate faction ships (except the Revanant) - the Fleet pest is the only one I've found where a pirate BS completely outclasses it by every metric.
I can't see that it does anything that the mach can't do better.
Mach is faster, more DPS, more drone space and bandwidth, shoots farther, etc

Meanwhile: CNR/SNI have no comparable pirate BS (the rattlesnake makes a crapy missile boat)
N Domi- same drone capabilities as the Rattler, a bit faster, much more DPS from its highs, can armor tank well and do armor or shield tanks(but weaker shield tank)
Napoc- more range than a NM, particularly with pulse fits, armor tanks rather than shield tanks
Ngeddon- Armor tanks much faster, better drone bay, faster
Nmega- more buffer than the vindi, more drone space, much much longer targeting range, making a rail fit more usable

The phoon does its missile thing (and will do so even more in a coming patch).... but.... the Fleet pest... save your isk

Best thing you can say about the fleetpest is that it has extra hp. Why it can't have an extra turret slot, just as the CNR gets an extra missile slot, escapes me.

We'll have to wait and see what the tiercide project brings for battleships, I guess...

In my opinion, it won't change much. Tempest is an oversized BC, just as Stabby is an oversized frig. If CCP will do anything, they'll reinforce this role, but that's not a role that would make it an awesome missioning or alpha strike ship. I more or less expect it to remain the "pocket battleship" that it is today.
