Ramblings in order of occurrence:

-- Char creation (dear God that thing rocks)

  • You can't choose your charname *first*? People often fit the char to name - finding out it's taken later can *really* suck.
  • Can't adjust height?
  • Aw, no bare feet...
  • Eyeballs don't turn as much as I thought.
  • Can't turn your head to the left?
  • Those sliders are fiddly. Hard to grab. Miss being able to specify value.
  • Summat squonky with the iris colours - not matching the box colours well.
  • No green eyes?!?!
  • No matching eyebrows for a redhead.
  • Scars barely visible on very fair skin (Well, maybe they aren't)
  • Would like to dump out the settings (charshape or photo) so I can save them for another char. (Even output-only is good so I can compare).
  • Numbers nitty-gritty of Race/profession/etc missing - very uncertain on what I should pick in case I gimp my career path. Went googling and found most guides are wrong now? Specifically stating that "It doesn't matter - you can fix it after you start" (if it doesn't, still not sure yet) would be greatly appreciated.
  • Wouldn't mind being able to change profession foo after doing all the photos. The photos disappear if I backtrack.

(Be assured tho, none of the above counts a gnat's fart against the pure concentrated Awesome that is this char generator)

-- Game on

  • Oh God, I seriously can't invert the scrollwheel mapping? I've got hardwired reflexes I'll be fighting for months, if not years, during battle...
  • That font's gunna take some getting used to.. I can see the use in it tho, but I'm a 6x13 fixed font fan.
  • Very glad to see the tutorial popup. Closed game. Slept. Came back, tutorial popup has gone. Maybe I looked at the cert interface while browsing and upset its state? It was gone before it told me how I get it back.

The mass of data, options and buttons I can't actually complain about - life's just complicated. I'm just going to be hanging on Aura's apronstrings for a while.

-- Forum

  • The 'preview' button deleted my post. Salvaged it with the lil draft link, but the draft doesn't save the Subject line. Might be time sensitive (I'm slow)

Will ramble more as I bash my bonce on other things

You are looking to the left according to me

Race etc doesnt matter but looks and start system.

There are no fixed professions. You can do what you want.

Scroll wheel will quickly feel natural h wont use it a lot

To your points:

* I don't see how name first would change it. Usually people already have a name in mind or a look (or both).
* How does height make a difference. You are the only one atm that sees your space barbie.
* Got a point here, but also point 2 reply
* This is because CCP made it so that your eyes (or monocle) must be in the picture.
* You are looking to your leftP. If you mean from audience p.o.v. then no idea.
* Agree that sliders are sometimes small and work very odd.
* They don't match the box colors cause you can set your own color from the pop up
* Did you see the pop up that lets you change colors.
* Again, pop up should be able to match your hair color.
* True.
* Hmz. why would you want to make a 2nd character identical to your first.
* See Steven's reply about race/bloodline choice.
* Professions you choose during character creation are just there for lore sake. They don't change the game at all.

* You will get used to it. At start it is weird, eventually you won't even notice it (at least I don't).
* Fonts are better then they use to be. The old ones were so crap that some letters and numbers looked the same and it was hard to tell which one you were looking at.
* Believe the tutorial pop up settings is in the esc. menu options

* Forums do have a life on their own. They double post every so often or eat your entire wall of text.

Bit of advice there: There are two things you can turn when you're posing for the picture. One is your torso, and the other is the head. The axes are independent of each other, though, so if you have both torso and head turned all the way "left" (there are limits to how far you can turn), it will look like you're facing forward, but unable to turn your head left anymore.

Just try rotating both the torso and head in the opposite direction, and move the camera to compensate for the change in position. It's a little counter-intuitive, but it works.

Ed: Also, to get to the tutorial again, push F12 for the help dialog. It should be there, along with newbie agents, petitions, and other resources.

Green eyes also do exist, but you have to select one of the brown colours.

I seem to smell the stench of appeasement in the air.

-- Tutorial

  • "Ask in the Rookie Help Channel" - The highlighting implies it's a specific name. It doesn't exist.
  • Select your racial frigate skill and right click to "select Train After Current Queue". - No such option by *that* name.

-- Misc

  • My char has their neck spineplug missing its metalness - it's skin coloured in whatever texture set I'm using (probly the highest)
  • Used chat help to find the Ctrl-W 'close current window' binding, as those close buttons are teeny-tiny and things were getting too fiddly. (Blew away two chat tabs and the tutorial before I worked out that Eve uses 'click-to-focus' instead of 'focus-follows-mouse' as it looked like)
  • Forum preview has a nice 50% nomnom rate so far as I edit my post slowly as I play.
  • Hope you get a doll posture/stance/mood setting eventually. My toon is not a catwalk model.
  • This game *so* needs a builtin command prompt. Hmm.. you can make them out of javascript.. I wonder how good the builtin browser is...

I should clarify: the point of my ramblings is so CCP can see through the eyes of an approaching newbie. I don't know where I should post this stuff, but the newbie/tutorial forum seemed a good bet. I don't need the answers per-se (appreciated tho) - I need to not need to ask the questions :-)

And the scrollwheel will drive me nuts as I'll be going back and forth to other games (which are going to seem real ugly now), and have to rewire my brain each time...
And yeah, mea culpa, didn't use the right left :-)

Newbie's first impressions would include positive things about the game too. Your posts are all complaints. They're not even worded as suggestions on how to improve, just "omg you can't do x?" drama.

- Rookie Help is the name of the channel and it's automatic on login for 30 days with a new account. There's no need to find it.

- While technically correct, the options to Add to Queue and Train Now are intuitive, I think.

- Sometimes mine is there and sometimes it isn't. Wear a jacket, I guess?

- Might want to use the in-game notepad for continued posts of this nature. (Although, I'm not quite sure where this thread is going.)

- I think J'Poll's point is that since you don't interact with anyone else's space barbie, height is irrelevant.

Aaand 'Time-til-ragemonkey' marked. Too many helpful people were ahead of you, so I'm staying. Sorry P

Ah, that explains things. I installed the client >30 days after I got the account. Don't ask, I'm an idiot, I know.

Re Height irrelevance. No. The first thing you do is choose the size of your canvas. I could not. Look at her, she's a teenager. A six foot plus teenager. This was unexpected. It doesn't *matter* right now, no, but this is a list of things that I hit my head on, and that was one of them. When the list is not that, you will have your point. Until then, you sure aren't negging me *just in case* I'm attacking Eve?Roll

Politely worded suggestion on where I could stick my list duly noted however Blink

And my backlog of ramblings now contains:
....
Nothing..
Nada..
Zip...

I'm now flying in space, connected to the help channels, chewing happily on the tutorial sequence, swimming in a sea of Pure Awesome. Everything is doing what it said it would. Nothing is currently in my way, and I'm not hitting any more tree roots on my way down the rabbit hole.

So in case anyone is in any doubt here, I would just like to state for the record, that Eve is Absolutely Awesome, the forums and the Help Chat are really bluddy brilliant, and the ragemonkeys are just so *cuuuuuute* and *fwufffyyyy*!!!!
And my sleep patterns are going to be so screwed....

Just so you know...

The character creator used to be just developing a small 2-D picture for the Show Info window.

WiS (Walking in Station -- kind of like The Sims In Space) was on the front burner for a while, making an elaborate character creator relevant. WiS has since taken a back seat to FiS (Flying in Space) improvements. There is no estimate as to when WiS (and therefore the character creator) might become relevant again, so don't expect changes any time soon.

I'm actually hoping they take the now-unnecessary code back out of the game and give us back the simple 2-D creator again. We likely won't be using the 3-D characters for years. They can always re-insert the code when they have that part of the game fleshed out again.

I would LOVE to hear everything you think about our game, what are the points of confusion (what doesn't make sense to you?) and frustration. Also the bits you like so we know what is actually working :D

When making a portrait:

* right-click drag (move portrait)
* left-click drag (move body)
* left + right click drag (zoom)

Depending on your pose, you have different limitations of how you can move. Experiment. A lot.

    Invalid metaphor. Your canvas informs, eh, something, about your painting. Your canvas, in this game, isn't your height but your race, bloodline, and the school that shows up on your description. That's what informs your background and what ships you start out flying. You can do whatever you want after that and be a Minmater who lives in the Amarr empire and reaps the benefits of the slave trade, but your height informs nothing. If you want it to inform something, just tell yourself that you're a capsuleer and that capsuleers, by nature, are Very Special People (no, really, they are) and unusual height is to be expected. Just look at the freshman women on a college basketball team. Six foot teenagers aren't unheard of. And to that, you did choose to make her look like a teenager. Not all female characters do. Note Alexis Valentyne who posted in this thread.

    Does it matter what I think of stream-of-consciousness posts? You've got an Official Endorsement from both an ISD and a Dev (He loves it! In caps!), who may or may not be giving the same consideration to the stickied Tutorial Suggestions thread.

    And for the record, Merouk Bass is nothing but helpful and patient with new players who ask ridiculous questions. I saw very little in the way of questions in either of your posts and this is the Q&A forum. Actual questions are usually expected.

    Quote:

    My suggestion was based on the inference that you are alt-tabbing between the game to the forums while playing. I was noting that there is an in-game notepad on which you can type your observations and then paste to a forum post.

    2nd post with bullet points

    * As being said. It's called Rookie Help and is only visible for the first 30 days of your account. After that there is the general Help and lots and lots of player made channels for the sake of helping new players (Xercodo's one comes to mind).

    * You will have to manually open your skillqueue and add it to the end. That's what they mean. If people / tutorials would have to type out every single step you should take, prepare for massive walls of text.

    ---

    * Hmz. Like I said, it's a space barbie for personal (ab)use. Nobody else sees it, EVE is about spaceships not barbies. I really don't care how other peoples avatars etc look like, it's about their ships and what they can do with it.

    * Trial and error is key. Though I must admit, on really large screens with very high resolution, EVE buttons are really small.

    * Hence why I don't use preview. The forums saves a draft every once in a while and by using chrome I just make 2 windows - One on which I read your post and the 2nd one on which I type this reply - Alt-tab is my friend).

    * NO poses or other typical rollercoaster 12 year old Avatar stuff here. Internet spaceships is serious business, and I think most older people have the captain's quarter disabled and use hangar view (cause ship spinning is WAY more awesome then a useless space barbie. It even has a counter).

    * Why would you want a commandprompt...

    And like others said, please, besides the bad points...also add the good points, this thread is starting to look like the all familiar whine threads nobody else cares about.

    And tutorial suggestions should be placed in the sticky on the NCQA next time.

    I still consider myself a new player, just starting around June 1st. I thought the tutorial missions were really good. It gave good instructions on the mechanics of the game and gave a little taste of all that Eve has to offer.

    But after I completed all those tutorial missions, I felt like I was booted out of school and told "Go out and make something of yourself". I was at a loss for what to do next.

    Most schools have Career Guidance to help you find a job after you graduate. I think it would be a good idea to have something like that in Eve. Like after you finish all the training missions, you would get some referrals to some local agents of different types.

    Then the new player right out of school could at least move on to something with a little confidence and not feel so lost.

    That's.. the entire purpose of the career agents. "Here, try your hand at a selection of activities you might do." There really isnt any way I can think of to make that any more clear than to give a quick epilogue page that basically says "Go out and make something of yourself".

    If she's a teenager, she's a literally immortal teenage cyborg with fewer natural organic parts than Darth Vader. It can be reasonably assumed that Eggers just have to be built that tall to fit all the crazy data-handling nonsense in, and get to be the same height because whatever that is is the default clone size due to those restrictions.

    Also, given you live in null gravity in a gel-filled pod, they could technically have justified you being seven to ten feet tall and having to walk with external robotic assistance even if you were fully organic, that would actually be more consistent with continual-freefall human biology as currently understood, while "normal-sized and capable of wandering around at normal gravity" isn't (well, except going back to the cyborg demigod bit).

    On a more practical note, there's an interface in captain's quarters for messing with your portrait if you're not cool with what you ended up with on creation, and if the forum noms your post it will have saved a draft for you that will have all but maybe the last ten or so characters, restore it, finish your sentence, post, viola.

    So your idea is that all new players will be suggested into running missions for other agents. But what if someone wants:
    * to pvp
    * to mine
    * to be a trader.
    * to be an industrialist.
    * to be an explorer.

    All of those dont require any agent to be done.
