I used to stay on top of PC parts, performance, price, etc. But I have fallen out of step with the scene. I read Tom's Hardware now and again but the builder marathons are starting to get more experimental then what's the best bang for the buck.

I am returning to eve after a 4 month break. Just can't quit! :)

I wanted to see if I could build a box for 500 US bucks that could run two clients well (50 fps?). Not perfect but well. I have keyboard, mouse, lcd, and all that stuff. I want to throw out my old 2ghz core 2 duo box with its nvidia 8800gts (320meg ram) GPU and get something better. 500 bucks is all I got in my budget.

Any build suggestions?

Cheers!

What exactly are you throwing out and what are you keeping?

I put together a package that is over your budget by $158 but should serve as a nice guideline. http://pcpartpicker.com/p/BUiF

I kill kittens, and puppies and bunnies. I maim toddlers and teens and then more.

are you near a fry's? a friend of mine just bought this bundle.

with 300 left over, ram, a hard drive, a legit windows 8 64 bit OEM, and a 7770 shouldn't be hard to do, and would run your clients on 2 monitors (or one)

If you are after value for money over performance, AMD is the way to go, you get a lot more "bang for your buck" from AMD than Intel.

In my opinion I think the performance\value of 7770 isn't as good as the 7850.

As much as i am an intel fan, this is very true. Intel systems are comparatively quite a bit more expensive.

If you do things right, people won't be sure you've done anything at all...

That looks pretty good. I could keep my existing case too.

I am curious about your current PSU though, what brand, model and how many W does it have?

OP if you know any college students in the US, they can get you a genuine 2-year windows 8 pro 64 bit key... free through the microsoft dreamspark program.

hmm... number seem to say otherwise... guess it's all up to them drivers I guess. tbh ATI's mid-range cards like the 7770 are always a good bet.
