Drones are a very important weapon on war for Gallente and also for other races. The current interface is a mess and also an ugly solution compared with the weapon and ship system/module interface.

This is a proposal for a better UI. It's a suggestion, not the final version. I'm sure, the ccp designer can do much better (moreover there are some information/options missing in the current mockup, which i would like to have in the new interface).

Improved drone interface (mockup)

what i would like to have:

  1. an interface with all informations about drones and theire status visualy presented
  2. stacks for a couple of drones which i can asign and remove by drag&drop (between stacks)
  3. stacksize is limited by max. drones i can start and or bandwith or by a skill
  4. i can asign drones to a stack independently from their type (some combinations wouldn't make sense)
  5. start a stack of drones and bring them back in with a single click on the stack
  6. same for a single drone
  7. set a kind of stack mode for each stack

    • defensive: drones come back, when they are damaged (and a new one is started, if there is backup on the stack)
    • offensive: attack until being destroyed (new one ist being started, if there are drones left on the stack)

  • set a kind of attack modes for each stack

    • attacking: drones attack same target as your guns
    • supporting: drones attack selected target
    • wingman: drones attack nearest target
    • countermeasure: drones attack ships in range which are jamming, warp disrupting and so on ...

  • each drone icon shows the drone status and damage type they do

  • ... more suggestions/ideas from you :)

of course, this will need a lot of monitor space but also the current list does (cause you can't stack drones). so it would be nice if the pilots will be able to command the drones by assignable key-shortcuts, too.

I think it's easy to come up with a decent UI, the trick is to use as little of screen space as possible. Your proposal is not bad in this regard but I get feeling that it could be improved.

In any case drone UI should get some love.

But you can assign them to groups which are collapseable.

Please provide a mockup of what a carrier pilots screen would look like with your UI.

i'll try it, but i never flew a carrier. it would be nice, if you can provide me some numbers (averrage/max # drones in bay, in space, in a group ...), thx.

A standard carrier usually has 15 fighters and few hundred drones of all sizes and functions. Fighters are usually set into a group of 9 / 10 + second group of 6 / 5 of spares. Other drones are usually just grouped together by type, so if you lose some you can just launch spares right away.

Personally the last carrier I had (an Archon) had 15 fighters (5 firbolgs, 5 Einheri and 5 Templars) all in one group and then groups of 25 of all the usual drones, Warrior 2's , hobgoblins you name it.

    Looks good.
I only don´t like the position, but i think the drone interface should be moveable to the other side.
The set attack mode will be displayed on the bay key, won´t it? And with defense setting, when will the drones come back, As soon as they got hit/attacked or after there shield or armour is destroyed?
