Anybody on here used to play VGA Planets back in the 90s or so? Turn based strategy game with 11 races. Back in the day used to be PBEM only with someone hosting the game, and everybody turned in .trn files and waiting for .rst files to come back.

It was a ton of fun. Thought that by it's final version amazingly the 11 races had a lot of balance to them. There is a website now (planets.nu) that has taken the game and made it an all web interface. Kinda like VGA Planets done right.

Small shoutout to the site aside. A lot of great memories in the game. Trying to learn the advantages of all 11 races, trying to figure out how to build a good economy. And then all that side if you got attacked by somebody all bets were off!

Yeah, I actually used to play that, as Birdmen faction (a.k.a. Romulans)
Maybe it was an earlier version, but we found it not balanced at all, although the game had some very interesting approaches.
Carrier-races usually used to steamroll the battleship races, and the Cylons' minefields were beyond overpowered.
Cloaking was also extremely overpowered, I guess that was the reason why I chose the Romulans :P
But still, I just nostalgia'd hard...good fun times...

I'd like to apologize for the poor quality of the post above and sincerely hope you didn't waste your time reading it. Yes, I do feel bad about it.

What I really loved about VGA planets and what every other spaceship game including EVE is missing was the fact that in VGA planets every single ship needed fuel and was helpless without it.
You needed tankers for larger fleets, and every fleet had vital supply lines that could (with luck) be intercepted to screw a much larger fleet with only a handful of small and fast ships (and yes, being cloaky was a huge advantage)
