Hi, i run a music school IRL,
and today, one of my voice students decides she wants to sing an Adele song "someone like you", i'm not a huge adele fan, but that doesn't matter, she's a great singer, a fantastic singer.

and there are some songs that you just can't attempt unless you have the basics down of singing, otherwise you are not learning anything, you are struggling too hard and just wasting time when you could work on a song that teaches you something.

Adele's singing in this song is simply too advanced for this girl, of course if she practiced and did what i asked of her, she'd probably be able to get somewhere with this song.

Which brings me to my next point...

WHAT IS WRONG WITH KIDS?

when i went to my nephews football game i asked my brother who was coaching, "where is the scoreboard?" "who is winning?"

to which he replied "Noone in the county takes score anymore" and "they just play for fun"

Now, when you encounter some kid who thinks he can do anything he wants and be good at it, and get praise and worship from their friends, family and strangers, don't wonder why

These kids are a product of a society where we encourage people to suck, to not find what it is they are TRULY good at, hell, if i just played football for "fun" when i was a kid, i'd have probably not lost interest because i sucked at it and caused my team to lose, and i would have never even picked up a guitar, or a bass, or drums, or singing.

So this whole everyone created equal crap has been misinterpreted by all of our government, our schools, and society, NOONE is created equal, we have EQUAL RIGHTS,.... RIGHTS

your kid sucks at baseball, he's good at checkers

My kid sucks at math, good at smoking crack... you get the point

we have designed laws and systems around "OMG DONT HURT THEIR FEELINGS" when it is the competitive spirit of human nature that drives us to be better or to FIND what it is we can offer the world. Without it, we are simply raising a generation of entitled, whiny, t-wats that brag about how good they are at stuff they suck at, because noone has the heart to say..... YOU SUCK

They're kids. No experience, no perspective, full of bright ideas without any concept of what is actually involved.
Don't worry - they grow up and get over it. Mostly.

Hah, this remind me too much of the Danish Public schools.

I didn't learn much from the last few years because all the teachers' attention went to the problem kids. Noone bothered with challenging us who were smart.

its a shame but it's true, the smart kids don't need AS much help, but the dumb kids do, sorry you experienced that.

my school is apparently a place for ppl to bring their kids so they can brag about how "gifted" they are, when in reality, while some are truly gifted, i must grit my teeth and take their money to do my best to impart knowledge... but sometimes it seems hitting them in head with books would be better option...

True, they dont need as much help, but if they aren't challenged with new stuff, they wouldn't learn either. Learning stuff you already know is waste of time.

Yep, this 'we are all winners' thing has gotten out of hand. Parents boost their kids egos so much that they all think they're extra extra special and cannot fail. According to this article in The Atlantic "How to Land Your Kid in Therapy," the coddling is causing trouble for new college students. They found out that outside of mom and dad's home, nobody thinks they're special. If they fail a test, nobody says "It's just because you approach learning differently, darling."

By the way, I think this cult of esteem thing mainly happens with American parents of a certain race and certain economic classes. A lot of Walmart moms and dads still do a good job letting their kids know when they're being dumbasses.

Read the article if you get a chance. It's written by a mom in that class of "Madison, you're a genius" sector of people. She slams the whole thing hard, and includes lots of fun facts.

Actually I don't think the super rich coddle their kids like that either. They're competitive and they're pragmatic realists, so they push their little Joshuas and Ashleys pretty hard. It seems to be the middle and upper middle people that are all neurotic about stroking their kids' self-esteem.

All of which is why I apply a little bootcamp discipline to my kids when it comes to learning.
Fail a test? Expect to be drilled mercilessly on the subject until I see a marked improvement in test scores.
In sheer self-defense, my kids have learned to study. Which is excellent, because being an inconel-clad spit-shined turbo-powered a-hole is hard work if you're doing it right.

Yeah, my musician/music teacher friends are mostly in the same boat. I guess it's a trade off-- not much money doing something interesting and creative vs. more money doing something pretty dang uninteresting and mundane. More power to you mate. Smile

It's more about the parents not being able to accept their kids aren't the best at everything than it is the kids themselves. And it's not really about hurting their feelings as much as hurting their delusions. Most people are not equipped to face reality in this day and age, and construct idyllic fantasy worlds. If you have a problem with someone pointing out things you prefer to avoid thinking about, you can either become comfortable with it so it doesn't bother you anymore, or do something to change it. Don't freak out at people who remind you of reality.

Grown people are even worse for it in my opinion, only they've had more time to add to the complexity of their delusions, and maybe even make them believable. Most everyone has their excuses for why they failed or someone else did better than them, and that same logic is transferred to their children as extensions of themselves, rather than simply accepting they should improve or decide it's ok to be bad.

Oh, and i guarantee everyone at those sports matches knows the score, even the kids, they're just in denial about it. Blink
