I tried this idea but I ended up getting lazy and flew a cruiser in first to clear out the rats and then show up with the retriever.

As I mentioned, this fit was for level 3 mining missions, and there was one that spawned 3-6 cruiser drones and 5-20 frigate drones depending on how cranky the random number generator was feeling that day.

As I am now doing level 4 mining missions, the only one with a similar rat profile to Pile of Pithix is a gas mining mission. Some of the level 4 mining missions have a drone bunker that can be destroyed (and those drop drone poo - I thought drone poo was removed from the game), but the majority have non-destroyable drone bunkers that spawn drone-rats.

Suvey Scanner T2

2x T2 Modulated Strip Miners

Medium Processor Over clocking unit 1
2x Medium Mining Augmentor 1

5x T2 Mining drones


1648 m3 a min before boost and implants.

FInd a quiet 0.8-1.0
