I agree with OP. The future is coming whether you are ready for it or not. You can say that we will never grow out of bulky desktops and mouse and keyboard interfaces, but just remember very similar things were said when television first came out. Who would want to sit around a flashing box all day when you can just listen to the radio anyway?

That was a VERY different situation. If you want to go down that road, tell me... what happened to 3D movies in the 1950s? Did you know that they made 3D movies in the 50s?

What happened to them?

EVE with a touch screen would be so freaking amazing. Imagine if you could use your tablet or another monitor as the "dashboard" of your ship and have the screen clear of UI. SHUT UP AND TAKE MY MONEY!

I would, but going by your tastes Apple Inc. already has most of it.

eve dosnt have an outdated model. pay long enough till you become self sustaining (PLEX) that is all. what else.. oh yes Dust intergration. and after all the rebalanceing fine tweeks and modual pos's and possable highsec player owned customes offices we may see INCARNA part 2 so we can actually go through that fabled door.

and eve has been improveing its grafics by leaps and bounds unlike other games (of which i shall not even mention)
hell even DX11 tesalation soon iirc and possably even 3d support. eve + 3D... clean up isle 3!

in my view, EVE online probably is one of those game that can be played on tablet without need to overhaul UI interface (no doubt, there will be huge behind scene change)

EVE online don't require you to have AWSD to move around. since touch screen suppose to replace mouse. In paper theory, EVE online is playable on touchscreen tablet. But will it perform better than keyboard/mouse is other story.

The numbers don't lie. The traditional PC is walking dead. It pains me to admit as much as anyone.

I spent $4,000 custom-building my last PC. But my next PC will cost perhaps half that money. It will run Linux, not Windows. And I will likely use it less than either my slate, my gesture-enabled television, or my cellphone. So will you, even if you don't believe me yet.
Oh man I've been hearing that PCs are dying since the mid 80s....

Remember back when gaming died in the 80s and had no future?

Oh and I really hope you built that PC yourself or you got hella ripped off.

5 years ago I built my current machine for a bit under $500. The only thing I've had to upgrade is the graphics card (old 9800gt died so switched to 5770). Even though I'm running an "ancient" machine I'm still able to play any game out there at reasonable frame rates at reasonable settings (1920x1200 and 1900x1200 monitors). Hell I'll run two eve clients while playing Tera or counterstrike on a dual core. That's how slow computer speeds have been advancing lately (CPU makers are out of easy ways to micronize stuff as they are almost down to the atomic level now). You buy a well built system today and I guarantee you that the only part you'll be upgrading in the next 5 years will be your graphics. There's just no reason to upgrade like there was back when Moore's law was in effect.

I've played EVE on my tablet, the touch interface is very much suited to the way you play EVE.

Why you would choose to play EVE on a tiny screen is beyond me though, and large screens aren't good for touch interface. My arms aren't 4 feet long, nor would I want to spend a few hours lifting my arm up and down to touch my monitor.

Tablets are not the "future" of gaming, the future of protable gaming maybe.

A tablet will never replace a large HD screen for home gaming.

If the PC goes anywhere, it's going to end up in your living room.

I play EVE stretched out on a recliner, in front of a 55" HD TV. Why in the world would I trade that for a tablet.
I think you tablet freaks are unrealistic. Tablets have a long ways to go before they replace a personal computer, and when they do THEY'RE ARE COMPUTERS YOU NUMBNUTS!

Your laptop is a computer, isn't it?

Tablets aren't going to replace PC's they're replacing laptops.

Nope. The PC will remain the premiere gaming platform for sophisticated games.

Tablets are way over-hyped by the media.

The reason that Eve is lagging is proper (or any?) regression testing of client patches and updates. A test server with random folks trying out new features is not even in the same ballpark as a structured regression test.

Tablets are not the "future".

Anyone that thinks so spends too much time sipping over-priced coffee and feeling smug about owning an iPad.

They are a market driver right now because idiots with more money than sense will vomit cash at Apple for whatever gee-gaw they bully component producers into making for them. Which in turn Apple pats itself on the back for "inventing", when they haven't invented ****, just put stuff currently on the market together in a thin white plastic shell.

Like lemmings to a cliff, other companies parrot Apple in some twisted version of a technological Chinese firedrill to suck up the remaining tidbits of cash from PBR drinking hipster fashion victims who are too cool and independent (read: unemployed) to own a Mac. These will buy the off-brand gee-gaw and feel equally as smug as the Apple douche.

The rest of us who either, want to get some real work done, or want to play a game without boogers, spittle, or whatever other organic effluvium covering the screen, will pay half the money, get twice the power, and the ability to feel smug about other things.

lets look at the history of the new technology

PCs
Laptops
Cell phones with web browsers and keyboards
larger cell phones with touch screens and cameras
small tablets with touchscreens with cameras and no phones
larger tablets with the above
larger tablets with fold out/snap on flexi keyboards

whats in store for the future?

Laptops
PCs

its a vicious circle, eve is fine where it is

It's possible to do. But that doesn't mean it's a good idea. But there's nothing at all that suggests the touch interface in general is a replacement for a mouse interface. So I don't really know what you are talking about. Try using a touch-based spreadsheet. It's a pain in the ass. Some apps can work as good or better with touch instead of mouse, but they have to have an interface overhaul. I've not yet seen anything that simply allows touch input as a replacement for mouse input that actually doesn't make me want to throw the app out of the closest window.

No one in their right mind thinks of a touch interface as a replacement for a mouse. It's got to be a different interface that's designed for touch or it is going to suck.

I honestly feel like I just read fifty shades of dumb. --CCP Falcon

You sound like you're desperately trying to make a point that no one really cares about.

Yes, technology changes. A lot has changed with computing over the last 20 years, but fundamentally, you're talking about very different things. Tablets are not designed for complex gaming, never have, never will. I agree that mobile and tablets are the wave of the future, but not in the context you're trying to put them in.

So theres this review on Amazon about a 'Software Dev' who gets a tablet, he then gives it 2 stars and complains it isnt suitable and it lacks functionality, control and the screen is too small for development.

Below his review theres a mother of two kids who says the tablet is awesome because it means both of her kids can now access the internet and skype without using the main computer.

Which of these two people got made the right choice?

OP. (although it feels like I have posted this already), desktops are NOT suited for everyone, tablets are for people who dont require much from a PC, they typically want to browse the net, play a few casual games to pass time, talk to friends etc. Desktops and workstations WILL not become obsolete but they arent suited for everyone.

Also WoW doesnt have a tablet alternative and its still growing in numbers, EVE is also growing in numbers and I dont think anyone would actually like playing spreadsheet online on such a small screen

Also just because something is popular, doesnt mean its good *cough* Justin Beiber *cough*
