Buy Orders - From Where?

Hello,

I'm trying to determine how Buy Orders work.

Is it possible for someone to use a Buy Order to sell an item if they are not at the station in which the Buy Order is from or can you only ever sell to a buy order when you're in the station that buy order was created?

There's a lot of different things you can do depending on your skills, so I'm trying to figure out what the best way to buy/sell stuff is :)

Thanks!

when you set a buy order, you set the range at which people can sell to you.

if you say you want to pay 5 ISK per unit for 100 units of trit, and set it at the same station, people will have to sell it to you at that station.
if you set it at region-wide, people 12 jumps away in low sec will be able to sell to that buy order as well. (and probably only 3 units, just to **** off your assets listing)

if you are selling, then the buy orders that have a green highlight, are ones that you can sell to from your current location.

Gotcha.

So I can go along and say "I want to buy X but I don't want to pick it up, so I'll only buy it if you sell me it at this station"

or I can say "I want to buy X, anyone in the region can sell it to me and I'll pick it up where they sell it"

Correct?

Yes.

Use the advanced orders window for setting-up orders.

Note that if you check the box to box to save the settings, you will ALWAYS get the advanced window IF the duration is anything other than IMMEDIATE. This can be a problem if you are not careful when you really want to do an immediate sale of multiple items! I've often made that mistake.

note that you can also set a minimum, so you can specify that they can only sell to you if they are selling at least X. sometimes this can be a very relevant thing to keep in mind when working out prices.

The items cannot be teleported.

The skills let you sit on a border between 2-3 regions and manage your orders within those regions with minimal travel, because you can be far from where the orders are.

But items cannot teleport; somebody has to bring the item to the station if your buy order range is just the station, or you have to go pick up the items from all over the region if you've set the range to the region. And if you're selling, they can buy from anywhere, but they have to travel to the station where you have the items to pick them up.

And if you want to move the items or consolidate stocks or whatever, you have to go pick them up, or set up courier contracts and pay others to move stuff around for you. Range skills won't help you.

Practical examples:

- you can daytrade in Jita without being in Jita, which spares you all the spam and lag.

- if you had all your stuff in a 0.0 outpost, and suddenly they kick you out, make you enemy, and deny you docking rights, you can still sell your stuff if you're just cloaked up at a safespot anywhere in the region.

- you find a mission hub, several agents within 1-2 jumps of a central hub - set up sell orders for ships and gear at the hub, and set up buy orders for salvage and meta 3-4 modules with a range of 2 jumps of the hub, so you get them all.

- you put up a region-wide buy order for implants at 20,000.00 instead of the 2,000,000 they usually go for; if anybody anywhere tries to do a quick sell and doesn't pay attention, you get cheap implants. Since you just made a huge profit, going all over the place to pick them up isn't a big bother.

As a note 'region' range buy orders are often a mistake. At least for anything bulky.

Because Regions generally (always?) contain some lowsec. If you're not comfortable moving in low sec, that means what you buy there is riskier than you want. For no better price. (more risk, no better reward.)

Woo! CSM XI!

The items are always at the station at which it was sold. It is up toe the buyer to indicate how many jumps from the primary station they are willing to go to pick up the items.

Some other fun this about buy/sell orders.

You will ALWAYS buy from the lowest sell order and you will ALWAYS sell to the higher buy order, for your current station.

If you to buy/sell from/to a remote station to purchase, it will apply the same rules to that station.

That being said.

If the lowest buy order is listed at 1m and you click on a 2m sell order and buy, you will pay 2m for the 1m item. Same difference for buy orders. I can place a buy order for 1m, but if someone sells and set the price at 500k, I will only pay 500k for those items.
