Hi,

time to update my hardware, late 2008 MBP bought 2009! It's actually perfectly fine still, EVE on all low settings is nicely playable but I want the eye candy and/or better framerates. Also I want to sell it while it's still worth something.

After some speccing (and even considering a windows box), I stumbled upon a youtube vid showing the top-of-the line 2011 15" MBP delivering EVE on high settings, on the notebook display at native res.

Now I'm looking for some more info from owners:

- how is the framerate on a 24" 1920*1200 screen with max/near max settings?
- is dual-boxing possible (alt-tabbing to alt doing secondary stuff)
- your experiences with boot camp and EVE?
- how is the heat, I'd run it in clamshell mode?

And some non-EVE questions:

- what about the display choices- is the hires version usable for example in web development? It feels quite a lot of pixels for a 15" screen. I'm used to my matte screen, and matte only comes in that hires version. (this is not for daily use, but still often enough to force me to buy a notebook)
- I need 8GBs of memory, but is it possible to save a few euros by shopping it elsewhere?

8GBs is not a whole lot of memory (Photoshop, the hungry beast), so I think I need to stretch for an SSD to make the inevitable swapping faster. Any comments on those, or anything else I should consider?

Thanks in advance, if you have the time to help me out!

I got 8 GM memory, and an SSD, from macsales.com, which has served me well. But there's little special about it, so you probably buy from anywhere in Europe that sells computer parts. (Be sure to get an SSD with a sandforce controller; I believe Mac OS X still doesn't support TRIM on other SSDs.) Much cheaper than Apple, to be sure. I also have the hi res screen and code all day with it; I think it's fine. Eve runs fine at 1680x1050 with most but not all settings maxed, I haven't tried with big external monitors or boot camp.

And it's a good time to buy: http://www.macrumors.com/2011/10/24/apple-bumps-macbook-pro-with-processor-graphics-storage-upgrades/

Much appreciated, Nonnori!

Good info, now the cheaper model is also a viable option, unless the 512Mb RAM on the gpu is not enough for EVE?

Just a follow-up: In the end I decided to go for a separate PC (!!) workstation and Macbook Air. This combo is not only far more powerful, more mobile and upgradeable, but also about 500eur cheaper.
