The original wormhole (the gate on the Milky Way side was named ADAM, by the way) was in the Canopus system.

Also, I am moving this to EVE Fiction.

Just spotted this on the wiki page

The fictional desert planet Arrakis featured in the Dune series of novels by Frank Herbert is the third planet orbiting Canopus.
In the MMORPG Eve Online, the titular wormhole which led to the galaxy the player's experience set place in, was located in the Canopus system.

Was the choice of Canopus perhaps inspired by Dune?

I just noticed in the wiki link that Canopus is also known as The Star of the Old Man. Would be quite ironic that Old Man Star was the same one and humanity had started to make it back without knowing.

And yes, I realize that if we had made it back we would have seen other human buildings and lots of stuff so it isn't possible, but it would have been nice. :)

Not the name of the system.

By EVE naming standards at least, you're wrong.

In EVE's lore, if we did know about the system that Earth is in, it would be called "Sol".

For example, the system of Jita is called Jita because that's the actual name of the star, and it's labelled as such in game. That's why, for instance the fourth planet from Jita is called "Jita IV".

Since "Sol" is the name of our star, that's what the system would be called. If it were represented in EVE, the system's celestial list of planets (not including moons and an asteroid belt of course because it'd take hours to list them all) would look like this:

Sol (Star)
Sol I (Mercury)
Sol II (Venus)
Sol III (Earth)
Sol IV (Mars)
Sol V (Jupiter)
Sol VI (Saturn)
Sol VII (Uranus)
Sol VIII (Neptune)
Sol IX (Pluto)

And yeah, I included Pluto to give the little guy a break P

Compare this with the list of planets in Luminaire (the Gallente home system) for instance and you see where I'm coming from:

Luminaire (Star)
Luminaire I (Noya)
Luminaire II (Corufeu)
Luminaire III (Astrin)
Luminaire IV (Malloc)
Luminaire V (Tanet)
Luminaire VI (Gallente Prime)
Luminaire VII (Caldari Prime)
Luminaire VIII (Ortange)

The story makes no mention of earth being anywhere near the Eve gate. Mankind had already expanded to cover the entire milky way galaxy long before the Eve wormhole was discovered.

Not the entire Milky Way, but we'd reached the limits of where technology could take us, and were starting to suffer from conflict due to resource scarcity and overcrowding.

Also, as CCP Eterne has pointed out, the wormhole was not in Sol, it was in Canopus. Smile

While we're on the topic...can someone addess the glaring issue of the New Eden system having only one planet, that just HAPPENS to be habitable?

Because every time I go there I get flashbacks from that episode of Stargate: Universe where they came across that magically constructed solar system...

Where did it say we covered the WHOLE GALAXY??

Source please? ADAM? Really?? Cause if that's established lore, then holy crap does that open some cool options up for fiction writers.

I've seen this mentioned a few times as well in previous discussions about the EVE gate, can't remember where that came from though, might have been other CCP devs telling us or some old game backstory snippets.

There's also the issue that, uh, this was 20,000 years ago...

I regularly get the impression that the writers of the timeline had a complete lack of understanding of scale as regards just how ridiculously much even a stable and traditionalist culture can and will change over the course of just two centuries, let alone several millenia.

Five hundred years will pretty much utterly eradicate any sort've cultural historical antagonisms or heritage, in the same way that five hundred years left out in the weather will reduce a steel-plated tank to a curious reddish tinge to the ground noticable only to someone who uses a shovel on it.

You can CLAIM that you are "restoring your heritage" at that point. You aren't. At that point you're taking a few wild guesses and romantic ideas and mixing them with very modern ideas and trying to stir up some romanticism. The fundamental precepts that a religion holds dear will, three centuries later will be anathema to that religion.

Go back to the time when "everything was stable and unchanging". Things changed then. A lot. Demographics? Change. A lot. People like to think that the speed of change is a new thing. A few things are changing fast, but other things have changed very fast at different times.

20,000 years? That's a kids fable. We don't have any history that's 20,000 years old. The oldest history we have comes from a handful of countries that had fascinations with writing things on pieces of rock and burying them in hermetically sealed boxes in the middle of the desert. And we can barely understand the context from any of those. We can't even read the blueprints from the Saturn rockets. We have them, but we can't read them. They're ancient history, and the translation methods are lost technology.

Any sort've history about the EVE gate would fall into the same category as declarations of knowledge about the love life, social status, and adventures of Mitochondrial Eve.

While true in some ways for terrestrial environments (some artifacts do survive and give us rough theories about what life was like 20k years ago, and further back perhaps), in space, things deteriorate at a far slower rate. Artifacts from the terran exodus into New Eden that were left in space would probably be almost pristine, as far as artifacts go. After all, with no oxygen to corrode metal, and no weather to erode materials, only the very slow processes of solar radiation would destroy items, and that takes a lot longer than twenty thousand years unless you are very close to a star.

TL;DR: if you want to preserve something, there's nothing quite like vacuum.

Unless we find the artifacts in space or airless moons, were things are far more easily preserved.

It wasn't the first time I heard that though so it must have been out there at some point, maybe some old lore article that has since been deleted or something.
