People who let themselves or others get screwed over because they are too prideful and stubborn to behave rationally to reach a better outcome for themselves are common in EVE.

It takes absolutely nothing to tell everyone to go screw themselves and sit idly as you and the people around you get rectally violated by a mean person.

Agreeing to a ransom requires trust and decisiveness, you need to be able to decide whether or not you should trust the person you're potentially paying to let you go, and you need to make that decision before they decide to kill you right now. Sitting there and getting blown up while yelling profanity doesn't require you to do a goddamned thing.

Similarly CEOs and alliance executors who let their members suffer under wars for months, lose billions in ships and POS towers and end up with most of their players leaving corp or quit the game entirely when they could could have just sent a surrender offer are a dime a dozen. It takes absolutely no effort for someone claiming to be a leader to sit there and watch everything turn to **** around him. Going to the negotiating table takes humility and a legitimate desire to do what will actually help your members out and prevent your organization from being ground to dust.

Playing a reasonably well adjusted human being in EVE is significantly more difficult than playing an insane tough-guy who yells defiantly at everything. The only reason people do it is because it's so easy, I mean it doesn't hurt the person holding you to ransom to refuse it, whether they kill you, get money and let you go or get money and kill you all of those outcomes are acceptable to them, the only person the internet tough-guys are hurting are themselves.

When someone I'm shooting convos me and offers to give me isk to let them go, that's when I'm impressed by how brave they are, they're willing to accept the risk of me not letting them go for a chance at escape, that's why I let them go. And if I declare war on someone the CEO or diplomat convos me and asks what it will take to end the war before it starts I'm incredibly impressed, but out of about 250 wars my corp/alliance had had that one has happened about twice, usually you have to kill a bunch of people before anyone will even think about negotiating.

EvE is a harsh game, getting killed (and podded) is part of it. The best thing is to minimize the risk, be the hunter not the pray, if possible. Giving in to blackmail makes you a victim, and once a victim, always a victim.

If you're in a situation where you're being ransomed you're already a victim. But you have a choice: You can try and get yourself out of it somehow or you can type something about someone's mother into local while you sit there and get killed anyway.

It's not brave, it doesn't mean you stood up to anyone, it means you sat there and took it without trying to do a damned thing.

If you thought about it and decided that you don't think the guy will let you go, or that you don't want to set a precedent for paying people off, or you have some other legitimate reason then fine, that's your choice, but pretending that sitting there and getting your butthole destroyed by someone while being a belligerent douche somehow qualifies as standing up to them is a pretty big stretch of the imagination.

You shoulda took the battle course. These teach you the fine arts of "How not to run back to a gate at the first sign of trouble". There are other courses as well.

You do get the concept of "Pirate" correct? Always expect them to kill your ship and pod you whether or not you pay.. that way you are less disappointed when you pay and they kill/pod you anyways. Are there "honorable" pirates, sure but I wouldn't count on meeting one. Also - don't swear at them, just wish them a nice day, refuse to pay and take whats coming... saying swear words will remove all doubt about whether they will pod you.

Always forgive your enemies; nothing annoys them so much.
