I just watched that video by UnitLost on Youtube. He brings up some very valid points about the new player experience.

Where EVE is incredibly complex and already has many powerful players, it should be a high concern that the New Player Experience is actually making the cut. To me, the New Player Experience is still underachieving and in a lot of ways, lacking of powerful information and tools for new players.

A lot more emphasis should be put into the first hours of game play opposed to the first couple weeks. The Crash Course should be action packed and flashy. New players should know within the first hour of game-play all the rules of ship navigation, That the next gate in your route is highlighted in yellow, That double clicking in space sends your ship in that direction (there should really be a visual cue to this... glowing ripples?), and that you can lose your ship and your pod faster than you can say the word 'Help'.

Aura needs to use her Sexy voice and power over your HUD to show you exactly what EVE is about. There were several HUD improvements made to the New Player Experience just showing you to hit buttons that already existed; well next I think the game-play elements of the New Player Experience should be emphasized. Allow players to skip the tutorials for the situation of a player creating a new alt. (if the way rookies obtain skills does change, allocate skill-points to the pilot for skipping, but completing the tutorial fully will benefit the new player with ships, modules, and ISK.)

Tutorial Game-play Ideas
  • Instantly Training Skills relevant to the tutorial (A lot of people probably just fill their skill queue, and log off forever due to waiting).
  • Fancy transitions, visual effects, and cut-scenes to explain elements of the game.
  • Maybe Aura can control an NPC to help guide you through the Tutorial to completion (Teamwork is desirable in EVE after all).

I may have a lot of opinion, but I believe people will agree with me when I say that the New Player Experience requires a lot of improvement. I suspect that significantly more players will hook onto EVE as well as many previous players that couldn't figure it out before. Having been a CEO for many years and having filled the 'Human Resources' role many times, I can say a lot about the New Player Experience. I want rookies to know how to use their **** prior to joining any organization.

Am I wrong with this logic?
