New Player Feedback (long)

I decided to try this game out after 9 years, because I kept seeing information about the game. I am very impressed with the depth of this game and have decided to try the game out with the free trial.

I was having some fun at first; however all that quickly faded:

The new player learning curve is HUGE, I was following the first tutorials and was actually seeing how indepth this game goes.

Then came my career choice and decided to try exploration. This sounds like something I would like to do and would enjoy in the long run.

I started out doing the 1 and 2 tutorials of this and learning about the anomalies out there I could find. Then the game went to hell for a "I throw you to the wolves" sort of mentality.

I went to the wrong area trying to find a Gramatic anomaly using probes. Well my ship was destoryed and I had to go back and dock. I was able to get my "Starter" ship back up and was going to try it again.

This is where things went down hill, the mission requires you to have a "Pass Key" to access the second part of the training career. Well I can't get my contents from my other ship because the pirates - 4 shot me and I die again.

What I don't understand is that, I couldn't complete a career training mission (Learning about all the types of anomalies out there" because of no "pass key" to space jump to second part of mission. I deleted the training mission because I was frustrated and now the stupid agent will not talk to me.

If this is a training career mission...then why the hell would you have it that it will not talk to me any more for a certain period of time. I have to wait or might not ever learn about anomalies if I can't chat with him for training. I DO NOT want to do the other career aspects of the game at this time, because the "TIME SINK" is huge when you are trying to learn the game and the "reward/fun vs. Time Sink" isn't very great imo.

I believe if you wanted to attract new players to this game after 9 years then have a space area that trains players and not hinders them. If players feel like they know over 30-50% of the game somewhat they might actually want to sub and then as more players join the game, older players see new blood and life into the game and might return as wel.

I just can't at this time, see myself sinking time and money into a game that hinders me from the start in learning "Vital" aspects of a game which involves multiple careers.

Good luck and thanks for the free trial.

so you went to wrong area, why do you complain?it was your fault and you are gonna learn from it

i also believe if you petition it,ccp staff can reset the mission for you, other option is to go to different tutorial station and do it all over again, you are not loosing anything - for caldari its amsen, akiainavas and forgot the third one

Everyone has complained about the tutorials. The thing is that the tutorials have actually gotten lots better, but it has to reach so high to meet the needs of people - most of whom go "tl;dr" and flip past it anyways, at which point they complain about the tutorials not telling them about things that it already explained! Most of the problems people have are actually explained in the tutorials, actually, but it's a lot of information that people have a hard time putting in context at the time. I almost think they need a bunch of other odd tutorials that put you in a cruiser, just to recap tracking and radius now that you have a ship where that matters, for instance.
Google the CCP Scanning tutorial on Youtube. Also experiment with shift-drag and alt-drag which were added after that was made. It's a bit of a shame that the included browser doesn't do enough HTML5 to be able to stream tutorial videos like that. It realloy has come a long way though. Ask on the Rookie chat and Help channels. People try to be helpful. It's a bit hard to explain exploration in chat though, because its a bit like trying to teach someone how to paint a dog over the telephone, who has never painted and doesn't know what a dog looks like.

Good luck and thanks for the free trial.

Training is your responsibility and no NPC can do it as well as another player. A simple google search or a question here would have led you to a wealth of knowledge. Instead you posted "waaaaa this game makes me read and has consequences even on day one waaaaa."

Good luck in your search for a game that is hard and rewarding but also holds your hand like a two year old.

You are 100% correct my fault, but you know the learning curve is sort of like this. You go to school up to the fifth grade and then you move to another town. You noticed you are not up to the same point in math or science in this "case" with the other students and the teacher replies, well it's your fault for moving and you will learn from it and not do it again.

I am a new player trying the "Trial Version" so I am not paying yet, to say I am dedicated to this game and its community. I do not want anything handed to me in the game; however I would like to be able to do a tutorial mission and be able to make mistakes and know that if I make them after the tutorial aspect, then it is on me - not during. I stated "Time Sink vs. Reward/Fun" is not in the same ratio, esp. for players if they do not make through a full 15 day trial because of tutorial is not mistake friendly.

In the end this is a "game" and there are many of them, some requiring subs and others f2p...when learning something new you want to have fun and learn the mechanics, if you suffer learning the mechanics then do you think you will continue to grow or shrink in new players joining up.

I am not complaining, I am stating my opinion as a new player wanting to find a game with depth and fun and overall - mature and great community.

Awesome, a new player is posting his opinion and being slammed by the players of a community because what they have been through in the 6 hours of play...hmm. Thanks but no thanks, you can keep what community you have and good luck with the game and new players joining.

ps. I have done some research on the game, but "google" isn't the game...and by the way if you do google the game information, there are "MANY" threads about the "Elitist Jerks and bad community" outside of the new player channel. Thank you for actually making those threads true to their word.

There is no "knowing 30-50% of the game" by the way. If you learned to scan, joined a corp and were wardeced a week later you'd run like you were on fire if the tutorial was too hard to deal with...honestly I'm not trying to be a peckerhead.

And yes, noone will be nice to you here when you have 6 hours of experience and start making statements rather than asking us questions we can help you with...you have a question for me or more whining? Remember this section is called Q&A for a reason instead of New players Opinions...save that for general D when you subscribe.

I can't disagree with your point that there is a steep learning curve, (and the passkeys are annoying -- I kept forgetting to load them into my ship) but if you decide you do want to complete the mission, I have a couple of suggestions.

You can file a petition in game to have the mission reset. Those types of new player requests seem to always be quickly granted.

You can fly to a new career agent and run the same mission for that agent. Where to find all the career agents:
http://wiki.eveonline.com/en/wiki/Career_Agents

There are also a number of player-made videos available to help. Seamus Donohue's videos tutorials are popular.

episode 34 Exploration:

episode 35 Exploration:

There are also some player coporations in-game that help train new players. (There are also some pretenders who scam new players.) If you are interested, people on the forum would be happy to recommend some.

If you require a game that gives more 'guidance' from NPCs, this may not be the game for you.

One thing about this game is that other than very basic knowledge you mostly learn from other players. Sure you can learn to run missions and just run missions the whole of your game life here, but most will not find that rewarding.

So my biggest suggestion to your problem is that you find a new player friendly corporation where you are comfortable. To play this game to any degree of proficiency requires a great degree of social interaction. There are many paths you can take and some guidance or trading of experience can go a very long way towards making your experience more enjoyable.

Who knows, you might meet a friend or two along the way.

PS: Don't worry about the trolls, some people seem to just love to troll the forums to have a place to put their negativity out on the street for some reason.

These aren't sarcastic questions, but did you have the right weapons for your ship? Was the ship outfitted correctly? Did you have shields or any other equipment? Did you ask for help in the Rookie channel?

The pirates are there because if you set exploration as a career, you'll have to deal them then too, but they'll be much harder to kill. Yes, it's training, but it's training you not just to explore, but to fight off rats and other players when you do find something.

And I agree with whoever mentioned filing a petition to get the missions reset. And you will almost always get help in the rookie channel.

If you're not interested in a game that forces you to pay attention right from day one, invest effort and do stuff properly rather than skimming over it and getting away with it, that's fine. Many people don't like EVE for many different reasons, that's also fine. What's not fine is going "change this existing and flourishing game so that I like it more, then I might stay".

In short: if you don't like it no harm done, that's what the trial is for. Good luck elsewhere.

You have no idea, as you've just barely scratched the surface. As for the learning curve - Obligatory Visual Explanation.

Don't rush EVE. Exploration is indeed great and exciting (well *cough* I enjoy it) but keep an open mind. Here is another visual explanation for you.

Zyn Graveside wrote:
Stuff about tutorials...

Bear in mind - most of the explorers in EVE didn't have a tutorial to figure things out (and btw, the tutorial on exploration is of very limited value). We put a bunch of probes in a ship went off into space and... well mostly we got blown up. But after a while we found a few nice toys and had our fun along the way.

The tutorials contain a lot of useful information, but they certainly don't cover all vital aspects of the game. (Or you'd spend at least three months running just tutorials... my guess is that would also put quite a few people off). The best way to learn in EVE is from other players and by trying things out. Just be careful who you trust.

If you decide to stay drop me a line in game I'll give you a few pointers to start you off on exploration.

The exploration tutorial is the hardest one in my opinion.

But, you do need to finish all the other ones even if you have your heart set on scouting. They all teach useful skills and give you a bunch of ships and equiptmet you will want later regardless of where the journey takes you. It helped me somewhat.

I do agree with the above posters, I lucked up and got into a corp very early and learned from them. For newer players, though I have heard that can be hard because everyone is paranoid that all newbies are secret spies.. but oh well. Guess it is lucky.

Some of the things that the bigger guys do, you may not be able to do very well as a newr player. For example, the first corp I was in went into wormhole. But, there was no way I would survive sleepers. Nor could I stealth and to salvage you needed salvaging 4. All I would be able to do is sit in a POS or maybe mine. Not sure about null. Low, I may have been able to fake, but with ship losses from noobishness.

For the real exploration, in my opinion, does not really come into it's own till stealth (which I am inching towards) You will also need to mine, trade, build, research, mission, or fight in the meantime.

If you are finding Eve Online to be too difficult for you at this point, after all the overhauling and streamlining that was done over the years to the tutorials and new-player experience by CCP, then obviously this game was never meant for you.

But if you feel determined to complete that objective you picked with your career, then you're persistence will help push you through the obstacles and overcome. If you can do that, then there is hope for you yet.

Thank you for all the positive comments and to those that are semi-trolling me to leave for this game might not be for me, well you are correct.

I understand the older generation that came to the game from start or even in the last 4 - 5 years had a HUGE learning curve as well and sometimes it was try and try again to achieve things. Today thou, it is 2013 and the game has made many vast improvements, but I still question one thing.

If new-blood isn't having fun in a tutorial, then how do you keep them and willingly pay a subscription? I am new face in a 9 year old game with many new games on the horizon. What is calling me to this game, the space adventure of an open world? "HELL YEAH!!!", but if one can't survive in tutorials missions or doesn't understand the full effect of the game then most will leave and say stupid stuff like, "I'll wait until it is F2P" which to me is just down right silly.

I am not whinning about the game, it is awesome and wish I would've started the game 9 years ago, because I love getting into a world from the start and help it develop.

All I was stating, if there was a more mistake friendly tutorial before I did the leap of faith. Things like a mission reset for just the tutorial area, something like the Passkeys you need. Then when a new player does something stupid they don't feel like they have wasted their time, resource and then become frustrated and move back to another game.

When a new player reaches said end of tutorials and career path missions, they are given a message like, "Welcome to the Universe of Eve, from this point forward you are vulnerable and responsible for the decision you make as you progress within...enjoy."

Anyhow, thanks community and I wish you all well in the universe of Eve.

F12 -> Petition. Ask for a reset. Gets done very quickly.

Just one point.. yes, you have a trial account, but you are not playing a trial game. You're in the same universe with the rest of us, you can go anywhere, the only limitations are on the skills that cannot be trained on a trial (most of which you can't get to in the 14/21 days anyway)

You're vulnerable and fully responsible for the decisions you make from the first time you undock.

Here's why this is not the game for everyone. You were presented with a problem: My passkey is stuck in a wreck I really can't get to. If your solution to this problem is there should be a reset button then you will expect a reset button in the future to make things easy...in my opinion the tutorial is doing a great job at ACTUALLY TRAINING YOU.

Here are a few solutions to this problem that require no skillpoints:

Hop over one or two systems and ask in local if someone could grab it for you or just kill the rats.

Post a question here and we will help.

Do a google search for ...well anything really. (don't tell me google isn't the game. Players have spent a very long time making guides to help you...get very used to it)

Contact a GM to reset it for you.

This is a common error with plenty of existing postings on it and stuff about it all over the internet.

If you seriously aren't willing to spend five minutes doing some basic Google searches (perhaps from the ten minutes it took you to whinge uselessly in a ***** post), then this game, and indeed basically every game that doesn't rely entirely on bright primary colors and ponies / unicorns to hold your attention, is probably not for you.
