Why dont planets in Eve Orbit stars? I know this is EVE but this is one mechanic I think should have some sort of realistic aspect to it.

I would love to create a bookmark and 6moths later come back and its nowhere near any planets or stations. I wish they would bring back warping to specific coordinates so we can create bookmarks alittle easier.

Because it would create an awful lot of hassle for little to no gain.

Because to describe the position of any point in space you need a reference point.
When you have moving planets, how do you describe positions of other objects in space?
Are stations, stargates and bookmarks placed relative to the star, the nearest planet, moon, asteroid field?

The fixed solar system are just needed for game mechanics.

If this was the actual purpose of this thread, I applaud you, sir.

They don't have a Icelandic version of Mr Braben more than likely.

I understand the need for a fixed point but couldnt they use the Star as a fixed point?

Your avatar looks troubled. Does this bother you so much?

Because planets are damn slow, or rather solar systems are damn big. With most planets you wouldn't notice any difference for months, years or in some cases decades or centuries.

So as already mentioned, lots of hassle for very little gain.

Do not argue with an idiot. He will drag you down to his level and beat you with experience.

Nice completely unrelated crap comment... well played. Smile

One of the Dev Team (while commenting on why planets recently stopped rotating as a necessary part of the DUST deployment) mentioned that they had some long range but fairly serious idea's floating around that concerned "fixed grids".

In other words the grid around a celestial object would not just randomly generate and move when people warp to a point in space as they do now (although points in the middle of nowhere would continue to do so).

Instead a grid would always be in place around a planet (or other celestial) with a very specific range of coordinates permanently assigned to it.

Currently, if the planets orbited, any bookmarks you made around a celestial would rapidly become useless as the next time you warped to it the celestial would have moved. If this system is developed that won't be an issue as your bookmark would be a coordinate on a permanent grid that moved with the planet. This would allow not only planetary rotation on it's axis again, but also would allow the planets to orbit in the system.

having a big party when all planets and stargates in a nullsec system align

how to fix eve: 1) remove ECM 2) rename dampeners to ECM 3) add new anti-drone ewar for caldari 4) give offgrid boosters ongrid combat value

The gain would be that if you set a bookmark anywhere in a system based off the star as a fixed point you can come back to that bookmark say 6 months down the road and it now becomes a good safe point that is so many AU's away from any highly traveled route. This of course wont work if the post above you is put in place as it will be a defined point on a grid.

I guess what I was trying to say is that it would be nice to bookmark safe spots outside of warp paths between celestials or gates or whatever.
