Story

It's a sad day for the internet. RIP Aaron Swartz, I've benefited immensely from web.py. You were too soon for this world.

That's shady as **** with all the other suspicious deaths of activists recently.

There is an online petition to remove the District Attorney who harassed him to death.

Visionary internet activist Aaron Swartz found dead; was this brilliant internet revolutionary 'taken out?'

They'll get my tinfoil hat when they pry it off of my cold, lifeless head!

Why would people doubt that people will do extremely bad things for their own self-interests. (I.e. money and/or power). History is full of blatant examples of that. Just these ruthless power elite don't have to sack cities, enslave people, or work kids 16 hours a day in a factory. Modern technology, communications, government systems, legal systems and corporate anonymity let them use more discrete, sophisticated methods. The many levels of complexity in modern society make it hard for information to trickle down to the regular joe, so that he might spot the bad deeds that are going on. Just because people don't spot it doesn't mean it's not happening. Are the people that are obsessed with money and power any nicer than they were in the days of Tamerlane or J.P. Morgan or Joseph Stalin? Don't think so.

Kind of along the same lines, Alan Greenspan (Chairman of U.S. Federal Reserve) said, "It is not that humans have become any more greedy than in generations past. It is that the avenues to express greed had grown so enormously."

Sorry for the tl;dr. I regret that I have but one life to give for my tinfoil hat.

It's not so much that we doubt people doing bad things, its that we doubt that everything that happens is because of a conspiracy rather than pure happenstance.

I've never cared for him, and considered him a self-indulgent narcissist, but that should not be a death-sentence.
That said, suicide is a very sad thing - especially for those left behind.

May he find peace in whatever afterworld he reaches, and may those who cared for him find solace in this world.

Tell someone you love them today, because life is short. But scream it at them in Esperanto, because life is also terrifying and confusing.

Don't do the crime, if you can't do the time.

Dude tries to steal proprietary info...years of research, work and private investment and give it all away for free. Gets caught. Faces jail time. Too mentally/emotionally weak to take the pressure. Takes the cowards way out.

No sympathy for him...just the poor folks he left behind looking for answers. In their struggle to understand they lash out against anyone they can blame aside from the coward himself.

Full disclosure: My father committed suicide. The most selfish, irresponsible and cowardly act a human can commit, IMO.

Actually, the research is publicly funded....

Edit: And the sad irony is that JSTOR (the organization the papers were scraped from) has released most of the documents to the public during all of this.

Shame we can't talk about politics, because i'm mighty curious what will happen in the US after Obama's speech tomorrow.

Based on what Swartz was on to with his FOIA requests, and his past accomplishments as an activist, I would put quotes around suicide.

The prosecution itself, being so ridiculous, was probably part of the attack, so people see that and think "wow that must have been stressful".

The "suicide" is one of the ways they do it. Conspiracy theory? Google "DC Madam".
