Bandwith useage for mobile internet?

I am looking for a way to play eve since i moved to a new home that has no landline for internet. Wireless seems to be the only way out, but im wondering how much bandwith EVE actually uses. Ofcourse things like how much you play, number of accounts etc. play a massive role.

For example, if i would like to play eve every day, for 3 hours with 2 clients (so a total of 42hrs a week) what kind of bandwith would i be using?

Im looking at 2GB/month 4GB/month and 7GB/month. But most providers dont want to let you go for a smaller datalimit once youve subscribed...so im trying to make an informed descision.

Any experience or help would be appreciated.

EVE was originally made to work on dialup so you should be fine. Just avoid channels with lots of text like the local of any trade hubs and you should be fine.

And even then after YEARS of chats my logs only have a few 100 MB...

I've been able to run EVE off the bandwidth from a 3G phone. I didn't notice any difference between that and my normal 802.11n WiFi in terms of EVE client performance.

What you want to avoid is having a flaky connection, or other bandwidth hogs (notably torrents) running.

my experience with eve over 3g in the past week: it consumes about 30-50mb an hour, depending on activity., UL and DL inclusive.

its not stable enough to take expensive ships out.

I had around 20MB per hour for the 10months I playes EvE on mobile internet last year. I was living in a quiet WH tho. Stability can become a huge issues tho. Often it was unplayable during prime time (17:00 - 21:00). I suppose too many people with their Iphones lurking in the internet while watching TV on the couch.

Voice com can be another issue. We had to create a special channel for me which used a lower bandwidth codec.

I wouldnt dare try voice comms on 3g, it'd drop packets like noones business.

my 3g provider does 1mb data rounding as well, which may account for our differing usage.

Thanks for the replies, so 4G might be an option to consider? if 50mb an hour is correct i should look for highspeed, low latency (4g) and about 5gb a month...

As far as I know, 4G will not give you lower latency or less packet loss. 4G will just give you higher speeds.

Whether or not packet loss is an issue depends on where you are. If you have very good service you can play EVE just fine on a tethered mobile connection (I used to play LoL, a far more twitchy game, just fine on such a connection). If you have a weak signal then yeah, don't even try.

latency is not an issue, but stability is. more then once, my connection has just dropped, always át some critical moment (curse you murphey) and taken several minutes to get back.

also, the data usage changes with activity, as eve only sends data as needed. 30mb per hour is activities like mining. 50mb per hour is level 4 mission running, with all the associated damage data and overview data your client needs. nullsec fleets may need even more. thats your ballpark, but youll have to just lump it and see.

Around ~30MB per hour.

I've played over 3G on my laptop while traveling, and while it is doable for trading, mining and the more comfortable PvE – I would not use it for PvP or the more hairy PvE content like wormholes.

Drops still happen and the latency is quite high.

Depending on the quality of your 4G network, it might be possible ( but how good is it somewhere with no landline available? ) but remember patches, voicecoms and all the other EVE related stuff you'd have to add on your top of your "normal" bandwidth usage.

I live in amsterdam, the first city in the netherlands to receive a 4G network i think, but there is no landline because it's a boat.

I think ill go for 4G with 4 or 5gb of data.

Thanks for all the information!

If it's in one of the canals, no chance to strike a deal with someone on land to set up a WiFi you pay for? Bear

Also I want your house boat Lol

Aye - but doesn't your virus scanner have so much fun with those......

20 MB/hr? That seems really generous. Last time I tried it I think I had about 5 MB in an hour of playing.

I can attest that back in 2003-2004.. it was possible to play Eve on Dialup. Now, I dunno..

Currently my primary internet service is through one of those Verizon "Hotspot" jetpack things. When actively playing two clients, plus Teamspeak, I occasionally will use as much as 64mb in an hour, but overall, my average for the last 3 months is 28mb per hour. Note that I do a LOT of chatting ;)

Depending upon where I'm geographically located (I'm in the United States, traveling around the country in a RV for the next year or so), I will connect with either 3G or 4G. Voice coms over Teamspeak are significantly better with 4G connection - minimal packet loss, good quality sound. Voice coms are frustrating when connected with 3G, much stuttering, robotic voice, and other audio issues.

Eve is slightly more responsive when 4G connected, but overall, have found 3G connection to be stable for Eve.

With both 3G and 4G, I find latency to be the biggest factor affecting quality - the lower the latency, the better the connection, regardless of connection speed.

If you go with a "hotspot" type of device, tether it via USB - that will reduce latency by a noticeable amount. If you go with a USB modem, they may try and upsell you one of those booster antennas that connect to the USB modem. The antennas just boost signal strength in my experience - meaning, I'm able to reach cell towers that I'm at the edge of range better - but I did not find the antennas to improve my signal quality in any meaningful way. YMMV.

Not sure where in the world you are located... if you are in the USA, look into the wholesaler Millenicom, I pay US$70 month for 20 gigs, no annual contract - Note that their hotspot plan uses the Verizon backbone, and their Unlimited plan uses the Sprint backbone. Been with them for 8 months with no problems at all, really pleased with their service.

Hope this helps!
