I'll be fitting out my Caracal soon, but I can't really decide whether to use the 1st or the 2nd weapon. Range vs power is very important. I'll be using it for PvE, maybe PvP.
Thanks.

In PvE you are mostly better off using Heavy Missiles, while in PvP both have their uses. Personally I like the HAM-Caracal a lot, since its range with HAMs is still enough to kite most other cruisers around and deals a truckload of DPS to BCs as well. But, as most other players will tell you, if you never PvP'd before: don't start with cruisers, a properly fit Caracal will still cost around 30m+ ISK, so learn the ropes in frigs first or prepare yourself to lose a lot of ISK in the beginning :)

HAMs: big rockets
HMLs: big light missiles (but a gagillion times better)

I'll take 2 carebears to go, with extra tears

If your "PvE"s are level 2 missions (ignore the rest of this post it isn't), I recommend considering Rapid Light Missile Launchers. It fires light missiles, at a fast rate :) A launcher for cruiser+ hulls. The rats in level 2s are still mainly frigates and HML/HAMs are not the best choice for those small stuff.

If I have to choose from HML and HAM for level 2s, I'll go HML. HMLs will have better applied damage against small things compared to HAMs and more range is always nice for missions.

As for PVP, a Caracal with Rapid missile launchers and T2 ammo can do very nice damage to cruisers while retaining all the small target fire projection.

In PvE, the only missions you should be doing with a caracal are L2, so you will prefer to use Rapids instead of heavies.

Of course if you are just beggining, forget about the T2 ammo and such. Just take it into account when you start firing boxes instead of crosses.
