This article came through my news feeds today about how to make a successful, popular, dramatic revamp of ui and core functionality. From the Internet-famous Anil Dash.

Key topics: communication, valuing feedback, and humility.

It's interesting to me how the ship rebalancing efforts seem to follow these guidelines more successfully than other CCP departments (some who tend to fail miserably.)

Even if it was followed to the letter by CCP, the forums would STILL be full of tears. Its the nature of things.

Since the cessation of their usefulness is imminent, may I appropriate your belongings?

The article talks about that too. The sheer number of screw ups that can be avoided by simply involving the very people who use the product is staggering. There really is no way for the average player to be involved with the current processes. I have the feeling most devs even feel left out of decisions they would be uniquely suited to work on.

I was postulating a couple of years ago, based on some sociological investigations, that ironically, the forums are usually not the best way to gather data regarding the current state of a game.

I began a small discussion into why this was, and ended it up as I drew nearer to the conclusion that forums are simply an example in Futility and creates the illusion of community involvement.

In reality forums are in my own personal experience an appendage, mostly useless of the pre Dot Com era.

Any kind of information the devs want to throw at us they can do better in youtube or as a flash news ingame.

There needs to be a concerted effort by the dev team to actually fence in within the forums the "community" and extract anything useful from them.

I can provide links to these inane ramblings on my own if you want but for some reason eve search now truncates my forum history so badly I cant find it.

Edit: Here it is

As a sidenote I remember the option to actually turn the forums into something actually useful existed
