Should have used the Safe Logout function.

(Someone scanned you down and got a shot off on you in the minute before you disappeared in a normal logoff. They then had 15 minutes to kill you.)

Use safe log out. Also, your modules deactivate on log-out, then you sit in space for a minute or so, dependent on flags.

CCP has no sense of humour.

Apparently the "safe logout" function will log you out safely.

So my granny tells me.

If you have no PvP or PvE timers running, it takes one minute for your ship to disappear from space after you have logged of. When you log off, all your modules stop working, off course including any cloaking device you might have fitted.
It is absolutely possible for others to scan you down in that time, warp to you and engage your ship. After the first hit your ship gets a PvP timer, which is 15 minutes. From then on your ship is effectively dead, as there are few ships in EvE that can survive 15 minutes of target shooting by the attacker, without having any modules running or backup support from other players.

Alternately you might consider using the Safe Log off procedure implemented in Retribution. It keeps you more in control when logging off in a less secure spot.

Safe logout is fine - but of course won't work with an active module, you gotta turn the cloak off.

Scans happen.

Not 15 minutes. Unlimited minutes. Every shot resets the 15 minute timer as of Crucible.

What a carebear! ;-)
In some places there's no stations for many jumps.

I stand corrected, you are absolutely right.

last time i checked a log off disables the cloak

how to fix eve: 1) remove ECM 2) rename dampeners to ECM 3) add new anti-drone ewar for caldari 4) give offgrid boosters ongrid combat value

All modules off, no fleets.
and you log out in 30 seconds.

Or just cloak up and go AFK as most of the mechanics are designed to bumfuck anyone not looking for or to be a killmail.

With PVE/PVP timers:

Stay in space until timers are gone, nomatter what. Other people can renew the timers by shooting you.

Without PVE/PVP timers:

Safe logout: All modules must be off, vanish quickly while you watch
Close client: All modules deactivate (including cloak), auto warp out if possible, 60 seconds BUT you can be given a timer if somebody tags you in this time, and you stay in space (this was changed last patch)

Safest strategy is safe logoff.
