So does anyone actually make their POS fuel anymore?

Just curious.

So last night while autopiloting an orca full of fuel and supplies last night I started thinking about making pos fuel PI components again. I haven't setup PI in forever, as isk from combat sites are so good doing PI just seems to tedious to bother.

But I started thinking i could at least use my army of PI alts to make POS fuel components to reduce my hauling needs.

but then I started adding things up and it makes no sense.

a large tower burns about 28,800 fuel blocks a month. that comes to 144,000m3 of fuel blocks to haul.

Even making all of the PI components, only adds up to ~40,000m3 of stuff. You still have to haul in the ice products. That's the kicker.

Hauling in the ice products is ~149,000m3 of stuff to haul. So unless my calculations are way off I would actually haul more if I wanted to make my own fuel at the POs in the WH than just bringing in the fuel blocks.

Make the PI. What you don't use you can sell for some pretty good ISK since Fuel components are always being bought. takes me two ITTY V runs to have enough Helium Isotopes, Heavy Water, and other components to make a single run(14,400) of fuel.

With just two PI chars I make enough coolant and Mech Parts to pay for a monthly plex with the left over products. I am not a huge PI guy either. I keep it pretty simple with 4 P1 planets per 1 P2 factory planet. Only haul once a week.

Way cheaper than buying the Blocks too. I just make a few extra trips to get Fuel components when I have a good K-space system and then make it as needed. my .02 ISK worth.

All of the above are pretty much it. I can add that if you have a hisec static, u can also wait for the proper system to pop up, jump the mack and orca and mine the ice yourself. i do that from time to time.

Given a standard large tower and the following volumes for PI components:
0.38 m3 - Oxygen
1.5 m3 - Coolant
1.5 m3 - Enriched Uranium
1.5 m3 - Mechanical Parts
6 m3 - Robotics
0.4 m3 - Heavy Water
0.4 m3 - Liquid Ozone
0.15 m3 - Isotopes
5 m3 - [Racial] Fuel Block

A week of said PI components is 6,317 m3.
A week of said ICE comps is 30,240 m3.
A week of fuel blocks is: 33,600 m3.

A month of said PI components is 25,268 m3.
A month of said ICE comps is 120,960 m3.
A month of fuel blocks is: 134,400 m3.

A month of ICE is ~ 3 Itty 5 trips.
A month of Fuel Blocks is ~ 4 itty 5 trips.

In the end it comes down to cost vs logisitcs. Once you have your PI planets setup, they are very low maintenance and you can easily offset your tower fuel cost by up to ~50% (ICE products make up about 50% of your tower fuel cost).

If you don't want to bother with the PI and pay "full" price for pre-made blocks, then an extra hauler trip per tower per month is all you need.

It really comes down to personal / corp / alliance preference. My preference is to run the PI (it's extra ISK if you have more than you need) and haul in the ICE.

as long as you have room to store the PI stuff in your pos, there is no reason to be empty on your way to jita.
unless you use a shuttle, buy a cheap industrial then blow it up when you're done hauling.

I should buy an Ishtar.
