Currently my main ship is my drake, it seems like a good solid ship and does ok for my play style ie pve, missions, i like to venture into c2-c3 wormholes etc.

i also have a cnr raven and a tengu, my problem here is that the raven seems to be paper thin and the tengu, well with the tengu i need to upgrade the modules however i am tight sod and don't want to waste to much isk on a ship that potentially i could not afford to replace if i lost it.
my missile skills are all ether lvl4 with quite a few at lvl5 i tend to use bog standard missiles, because i am tight Big smile and feel the t2 missiles cost way too much for a bit extra dps, maybe that is just my naive way of looking at the game. i have no regular income as such from manufacuring or anything like that, all my isk comes from mission's so it does take me a while to amass my funds.

so my question is:- do i waste my isk on upgrading these ships or would i be better off training to another ship altogether that would be more suited?

i have 600mil isk available and probably the same again in assets and space junk.

back to my current ships, below is my raven

10MN Afterburner II

Upgrade ab to 100MN.

Better yet, install two signal boosters with scripts, use Large Micro Jump Drive, kill everything from 180-210 km away.

I consider that any ship I make ISK with is a tool. And with most tools, you get what you pay for. (You wouldn't use a push mower to mow 10 acres, you would use a tractor with duel 60 inch blades) Really cheap tools just aren't as good as hi quality tools that cost more. Better tools make more money.

So my mission ships and Tengu usually are pimped out. If you can survive missions in a T2 fit, you can surely survive in a better fit.

As an alternative ship, the Machariel seems to be the king of missions. But a T2 Mach is....sad Sad

Your Raven should fit an XL Shield booster, T2 Launchers, 100MN Afterburner/or Target Painter/or Shield Boost Amp

Your Tengu is decently fit as is. I prefer Large Shield Booster myself, and specific hardners.

For missions, I use T1 ammo also, but for anomalies, plex's, I use T2 and faction ammo.

many thanks for your advice, my cost cutting seems to follow me in games, i love to make isk/gold/plat but actually hate to spend it, quite strange.
i will make the changes you suggest to the raven

Your defensive subsystem on the Tengu is more suited for group running a wormhole than missions. Try the Tengu Defensive - Amplification Node sub, this boosts your shield...boosts by up to 50%, instead of a minor resist bonus that you're wasting half of (due to rat damage types) and an unused RR bonus.

Here is your fit commented:

IdeaTengu Electronics - CPU Efficiency Gate Arrow for generic PvE use Dissolution Sequencer for strong sensors or Emergent Locus Analyzer for faster targetting
IdeaTengu Defensive - Adaptive Shielding Arrow bad for missions, you are flying with active tank, use Amplification Node
Tengu Engineering - Augmented Capacitor Reservoir
Tengu Offensive - Accelerated Ejection Bay
IdeaTengu Propulsion - Intercalated Nanofibers Arrow mostly PvP subsystem or for HAM fits for tihgt orbits, use Fuel Catalyst and perma run AB, speed and sigs are also your tanks.

6x Heavy Missile Launcher II Arrow see ammo notes bellow

Idea 10MN Afterburner II Arrow Republic Fleet 10MN Afterburner
IdeaMedium Shield Booster II Arrow Pithi A-type small shield booster, perma run it, use cheaper deadspace one, target at cap use 10GJ/sec
Idea2x Adaptive Invulnerability Field II Arrow this is not for missioning, at lest not in Caldari/Amarr space
IdeaEM Ward Amplifier II Arrow good for travel to avoid alpha death by 2 arty Tornados.
Here - to tank on missions use 3 faction hardeners - rat specific
In med slot put Cap Recharger II.

3x Ballistic Control System II
IdeaDamage Control II Arrow with Amplification node and tank notes above not necesarily needed

Idea3x Medium Capacitor Control Circuit I Arrow with notes above, replace with 2 Rigors+1 Flare Missile rigs. Skill Launcher Rigging at least to lvl 3, lvl 4 will allow you to use tech 2 rigs and will give even smaller penalty (this will give you big amount of CPU). Having missile rigs will let you apply more damage to small targets (a lot of frigs on lvl4 missions) and fast moving. Especially it will save your ass...ets when there will fly couple scraming or webbing frigates. Speed is your tank ...
warpout is your "Panic" button.

Oops1952x Mjolnir Fury Heavy Missile Question why on Tengu ? It has kinetic bonuses ...
Oops2592x Mjolnir Heavy Missile Question ditto. On Raven it's good, not on Drake/Tengu.
Oops976x Scourge Heavy Missile Attention Use Caldari Navy Scourge if you need to hit something 75-90 km away, for closer ranges use tech 2 Precision on frigates and tech 2 Fury on cruise and bigger. Especially with tech 2 you will benefit from missile rigs.
Anyway, I flied without missile rigs for a while ... DPS was pathetic.

Here is fit I'm using on lvl 4 (Guristas - over 1k dps tank, sustained):

[Tengu, guristas L4 1000tank]

Ballistic Control System II
Ballistic Control System II
Ballistic Control System II
Damage Control II

Dread Guristas Kinetic Deflection Field
Dread Guristas Kinetic Deflection Field
Dread Guristas Thermic Dissipation Field
Pithi A-Type Small Shield Booster
Republic Fleet 10MN Afterburner
Cap Recharger II

Heavy Missile Launcher II
Heavy Missile Launcher II
Heavy Missile Launcher II
Heavy Missile Launcher II
Heavy Missile Launcher II
Heavy Missile Launcher II

Medium Warhead Flare Catalyst I
Medium Warhead Rigor Catalyst I
Medium Warhead Rigor Catalyst I

Tengu Electronics - Dissolution Sequencer
Tengu Propulsion - Fuel Catalyst
Tengu Defensive - Amplification Node
Tengu Offensive - Accelerated Ejection Bay
Tengu Engineering - Augmented Capacitor Reservoir

(I'm skilling up Launcher rigging).
Don't hestitate to slill all subsystems to lvl 5, starting on def, off then electronics, engineering, propulsion.
Good skill investment: Weapon Upgrades lvl5, then Advanced WU to lvl 4.

There is this old EVE saying:
Dont fly anything you can't afford to lose.

Remember that. You should have a backup plan in case someone / something turns your shiny ship into a wreck.

An Alternative ship could be the nighthawk. I don't have any esperiance with it, but I guess its something in between the tengu and the raven. It does however take a long time to train for.
