Need advice for running missions with potential RL/afk situations...

Hi,

I haven't played since 2010, and I've started running missions again. One of the big changes since I last played is that I now have a son. I only play at night while he's asleep, but sometimes I need to jump up to get him water/hugs/tucks. I'm using a raven and had planned so save up for a CNR, but I'm afraid that I'll have to get up while unable to warp out and that will be it.

So, a few questions...

1) should I start working towards another ship? ( I don't care about how long it will take to train)
2) if I log out while scrambled, will I be safe? will my drones be toast?
3) is the CNR still a top mission ship? the forums seem very mixed on this.

I've been looking at the rattlesnake, but if I can just log out and be safe, I'll probably stick with the raven and aim for the CNR.

Thanks a lot in advance.

a navy scorpion is basically a raven with drake resists. it has a little less damage than the navy raven but with its bonus and the eight mid slots, you can probably permatank any mission and then some.
then there is also the tengu. as long as you are not webbed, it will pretty much tank any gurista or serpentis mission without breaking a sweat for as long as you want.

also, consider a crystal set; it will give you another 30-50% boost to your hield booster, which will push the two ships above well into four-digit permatank.

this fit is relatively cheap and will permatank up to 700 angel dps (~1100 with crystal set) while still dealing acceptable damage.

I should buy an Ishtar.

Droneboat is no good atm.

If you're already skilled along the missile tree, look into SNI (navy scorp). It's tanky and easy to make permaboost. An SNI with 4 bcs does the same dps as a CNR with 3 bcs, but has better tank, cap, speed, sig, locking speed, locking range, sensor strength, and basically everything. It's also cheaper.

a rattlesnake with sentries is fine for missions. you can also overtank it as much as you need as drones will be most of the dps. if you have to get up, recall the drones and there are few missions that could even come close to popping your tank.

With the increase in shiptoasting, the Report timer needs to be shortened.

I have been told that Rat only disrupt and don't scram, so with this information I would say you might fit the new MicroJumpDrive, when duty calls you can hit it and be 100 km from the rat swarm, witch should give you a couple minutes for 'Daddy Duty'.

I am not 100% on this but it might give you a comfort zone to work with till your little one can run a mouse, and back Daddy up in sites. :)

Things that keep me up at night;  Why do we use a voice communication device to send telegraphs? Moore's Law should state, Once you have paid off the last PC upgrade you will need another.

Thanks for all the help. The SNI looks perfect. Two follow up questions...

1) Should I get a regular scorpian now or just keep using my Raven? I only have around 40 mil ISK and my mission running has been very rough since I started back up. Lots of trouble with my tank on the tougher missions (probably due to being rusty as opposed to my skills or build).

2) I had been working towards high to low to null exploring before I stopped playing. Is that doable when I might need to AFK quickly?

Thanks again.

Regular scorpion is not for missioning, it is an ECM boat..

I'm a missile boater, so I can only comment on those, but I fly Tengu, CNR, Rattler, and SNI and all four of them can be trained and fitted to be able to walk away from the middle of a mission. I know, I do it all the time. Note that this assumes you train up your shields well, spend some money on good (expensive) modules, are cap stable (never know how long you'll be gone) , and control your aggro (which you are probably doing anyway).
Caveats: with the Tengu, you go in, kill anything that might web, circle something really fast, and you're good. With the Rattler (or any drones), you'll probably want to recall the drones until you get used to how each mission does with drone aggro. Some you can still AFK after killing a few things, others take more maintenance. But nothing tanks like a Rattler, so the ship should be fine.

It's fare from ideal to afk in low/null, unless you have a (covert) cloak it's never going to be safe to afk. I don't find that combat probes in general is a huge problem, but it's in the nature of exploration to move around and in some systems people tent to be more aggressive.

The two easy options i can think of would be, fly something you can afford to lose and/or a T3 or black ops. Flying a tier 2 battlecruiser you should be able to clear at least most/all low-sec sites, and still make a good profit even if you lose ships.

I'm a relatively respectable citizen. Multiple felon perhaps, but certainly not dangerous.
