Elite’s affect on Eve?

So Elite got the green light!

I’m interested in what effect everyone thinks this will have on Eve?

Competition is good obviously from a certain point of view.

But I worry that a certain risk averse demographic of the Eve ecosystem will leave en masse, weakening the Eve economy and game in general.

Any thoughts?

You seem to be under the impression that currect selection of games don't already offer that option. EVE has had to live with other space games, other space MMOs and an ever increasing number of new MMOs since the day it launched. None of them have had any significant impact on EVE. The one thing that can cause a mass exodus of players away from EVE is CCP's own actions. As long as they keep moving forward and improving the gameplay any sudden mass exodus scenario is extremely unlikely.

Yep, everyone who has come to eve for their spaceship sci-fi fix may go elsewhere. I can see Star Citizen and Elite providing much more immersive and involved gameplay.

Hopefully, DUST 514 and WIS will be fully implemented before Elite is released.

Not sure how many of them are still live//relevant, or still in development nowadays.

Heck, I am not even sure I remember all of the supposed "EVE killers" names right (most of which were never even in a nearby gaming niche to begin with)...
Black Prophecy, Jumpgate Evolution, Taikodom, Star Trek Online, Star Wars - The Old Republic, Infinity - The Quest for Earth ?

And then of course, also, the others which were not exactly hoped to be "killers" but nevertheless are still space-related and at least MMO-adjacent...
Battlestar Galactica Online, Dark Orbit, Ace Online, Air Rivals, Vendetta Online ?

Maybe also worth mentioning, the ones in a vaguely similar niche but not exactly space-related, like Darkfall and World of Tanks. Or maybe even Tribes Ascend.

Also, of course, the defunct ones, but those are hardly worth remembering, so I won't really bother.

My prediction?
Effect: Effectively nil.

Oh, some of the whinier wimps may run away. I will probably play it in parallel with EVE, should it reach shelves. But will CCP see a major change in demographics? Probably not.

Tell someone you love them today, because life is short. But scream it at them in Esperanto, because life is also terrifying and confusing.

If you have played this game for any number of years then you have already seen the effect. Many times over. If you expect any effect other than the one we always have then please explain your reasoning with more than one sentence.

You might be surprised how many of the people you consider risk averse really just don't like certain game mechanics.

Since 2005 I've never been interested in EVE PvP, but i'll probably be doing it in Star Citizen and Elite from day one. Cool

I'm not suggesting Eve is Doomed. But there has never been anything as close to Eve as this project.
Eve was openly based on Elite. Even the logo! And Braben has made it clear he's of the Anti-griefing camp.
The harshness and consequence of Eve is why it's still going strong 10 years on.
But how many players do we lose each week who cant see Eve for what it is.
I worry we'll lose even more with such a close - and less harsh alternative.
As much as the some of the pews would like it to be, Eve wouldn’t be the same without the carebear components.
We'll see I guess...

Star trek online, Star wars the old republic, Tabula Rasa.

Funny thing about the so called EVE Killers is often the people predicting that tens of thousands of EVE players will probably play them are right.

People play more then one game. How many EVE players play WoW, or Guild Wars, or SWOTOR, or STO, or Tetris.

These two new "Big Giants" are mostly single player games with some multiplayer so even if they take forever to complete and you make it to the top of the arena circuit, ect how many people will really abandon their 30+ Mil SP characters, leave their friends and corps and dump everything that is EVE for a single player game. Anyone whodoesn't put a hold on their EVE time and actually quits is someone who has been tettering on the edge forever and probably has "quit" a few times already.

Actual effect, many will play it, a few will unsub and less permanently, online average might drop a bit then level off.

Know what an EVE Killer looks like. It has all the most important, most loved aspects of EVE but does them undeniably better with some new stuff thrown in a Sci Fi setting with a ton of money poured into advertisement to reach all the players whom word of mouth doesn't. Not only that but it has to be so incredibly spectacular that everyone is willing to give up their Carriers and Mach's and T3's on their well skilled characters to start from scratch. Finally it has to have endless content player made or otherwise to keep people from going back.

If it isn't all that most people will play it simultaneously. That is why I laugh when the jet fighters in space games get declared EVE Killers, some EVE players may like jet fighters in space but that game is a separate genre and most people here also like tactical games and EVE ships are big space Dreadnaughts slugging it out, our smallest ships are bigger then an apartment building.

At most these fake EVE Killers are actually just the other game I play whether they turn out successful or not. I might try one of these two games, not ready to hang up my Hurricane and if I do probably not for good.

Elite may lure people away from eve, yes, but eve has a lot of passionate followers and it won't deviate them from playing eve.

Ok lets set this right, both Elite and Star Citizen are NOT MMO games. They are both "Sandbox" games but have less bells and whistles than eve, for instance the npc seeded markets. PvP will also be basically fully optional and "carebear".

They wont compete with EvE in the slightest.

There is always some competition, since individual player desires never perfectly align with the overall game design choices. This is also the reason why modding can greatly increase the appeal of a game. Not everyone considers PvP or the player driven market as necessary for their enjoyment. Such players can easily be seen to consider if the design choices of any new game align better with their personal desires. The reason why I don't think new games are a real threats is, because no matter how they choose to design the game, eventually they'll have to make those choices in detail.

New games seem most dangerous to existing ones when they themselves don't exist yet. This is when the designers are free to hype things up and everyone else can apply their personal preferance to the game and keep dreaming it will be a much better if not a perfect fit for them. They're treated as games, that will keep everything good about the old games, while fixing everything that was lacking or seen as a problem. This isn't going to happen because it can't happen. It's just going to be a different set of design choices with a different set of problems and most people are not going to get the game they imagined in their minds or find out, that it's not as appealing as they had imagined.

All the above doesn't mean the game isn't going to be good or draw away some players, but the actual affects always tend to be drasticly overstated and can also work in favor of existing games. New games bring new blood to the genre and can also be compared to old games in a negative light, which in turn can bring old and new gamers into existing games.

If anything, i think both Elite and Star Citizen will bring more people into EVE...

I'm sorry about, but most likely both star citizen and the new Elite will have to fight against the new X: Rebirth, not EvE.

I've been playing the X series fro a long time (and also in parallel with eve in the last months) and for what i can see, they have more in common with that kind of game, that with EvE.

the only people who think EVE will lose subscribers thanks to star citizen and elite are usually people who aren't satisfied enough with EVE in the first place, it's a redundant through and pointless argument.

people who are unsatisfied want a new toy... people who are satisfied are laughing because those new toys are just concepts.

I talked to Unifex about this at one point.

Apparently every time a big thing hits the market like diablo 3, xcom or whatever.. There is a dip in activity for a couple of weeks.. and then it goes back up again.

No game really competes with eve.. Most hardcore eve players know that there is no game that could replace eve for them, at least for now.

its just different.

I'm quitting. Bye! Frontier was the best game ever made and Dangerous will be amazing. DB always intimated that he wanted to produce an 'mmo' but not fall victim to instancing and 'the grind'. I think the way they're going about it is brilliant; you can play offline single player, or multiplayer balls deep in a persistent meta data environment.

Eve wise? No contest tbh. In Dangerous you actually pilot your ship. Its not a MUD In Space with RTS interface. Its twitch and gateless and literally vast, so vast, that if you want to be left alone, you can be! The game I always wanted Eve to be but obviously it never was and never will be. Eve was and is a trail blazing success. But its old and, however you dress it up, just DIKU in Space. I'm sure if Eve was being made today it would be like Dangerous thanks to the wonder of tech advances and cheap hardware. Not hatin' the Eve-O. Just glad there's going to be good alternatives. Hopefully good enough to heave-o the eve-o.

From the FAQ:

Quote:
How does multiplayer work?
You simply play the game, and depending on your configuration (your choice) some of the other ships you meet as you travel around are real players as opposed to computer-controlled ships. It may be a friend you have agreed to rendezvous with here, or it may be another real player you have encountered by chance. All players will be part of a “Pilot’s Federation” – that is how they are distinguished from non-players – so you will be able to tell who is a player and who is a non-player easily.

You will be able to save your position in certain key places (probably just in space stations, but possibly while in hyperspace too, if we feel it is needed). A save-and-quit option will be freely available at those points, as will the subsequent reload, but there will be a game cost for a reload following player death. Your ship will still be intact in the condition it was when the save occurred, but there will be a game currency charge (referred to as an insurance policy) for this. This is to prevent the obvious exploit of friends cooperating and killing each other to get each other’s cargo. If you can’t pay, then it will accumulate as an in-game debt, and the police may chase you!

There are no multiplayer lobbies, and the game will be played across many servers, augmented by peer-to-peer traffic for fast responses. Session creation and destruction happens during the long-range hyperspace countdown and hyperspace effect (which is a few seconds only), so is transparent to the player.

We have the concept of “groups”. They can be private groups just of your friends or open groups (that form part of the game) based on the play styles people prefer, and the rules in each can be different. Players will begin in the group “All” but can change groups at will, though it will be possible to be banned from groups due to antisocial behaviour, and you will only meet others in that group.

Premature may be?

The game is prolly 2 years away, and could suck!
