Out of Pod Utility Expected when?

I'm a rather disappointed with the "Out of Pod" experience so far. Not only has it raised the system requirements so that I can no longer play Eve Online on the road (which nixes a vast majority of my opportunities to play) but what did we get for it?

I'm a Luddite, and a Technophobe. But I've been playing Eve Online on and off for years now, and I honestly can't tell the difference in the "in Ship" experience. There may be an actual improvement, but from my unrefined eye, I can't see it.

Anyway, is there a plan to use all of that shading, etc. etc. in the near future? And if so for what exactly?

Confirming it is, and has always been, a beta test for avatar code for DUST 514.

Except that DUST uses the Unreal 3 Engine and doesn't effect DUST at all.

The CARBON engine WAS going to be used for World of Darkness but they decided to cut that out and use some other engine.

To the OP though, the out of pod experience as you call it, better known as Walking in Stations, WiS for short, was meant to be a much larger experience including being able to goto bars and hang out with people, playing mini games, gambling, being able to create stuff like storefronts, talking to agent face to face, trading contraband (since you cant trade ti with the market or contracts), holding meetings in corp offices and etc. There has even been talk about doing exploration inside of things like sleeper structures to find special items and resources that would only be find in those structures.

Sadly all the WiS development has largely been put on hold due to how badly the original deployment went. The CQ completely removed the old ship hanger and any attempt to turn it off was met with a static picture looking at the locked door out to the station. For the few that DID enable the CQ it was even worse in regards to performance, often overheating graphics cards. This, combined with many other factors (the introduction of the NeX store and the threat of pay-to-win items and the fact that many problems with the game have been left unfixed in favor of this badly optimized single room) spawned the Jita Riots. The time period is now referred to as the Summer of Rage.

People were canceling accounts left and right and the economy of Jita crawled to a halt as all the protesters filled the population cap, preventing many from being able to login to or jump into Jita. An emergency CSM meeting was even called to try and fix the issues.

Eventually CCP agreed to at least finish the other 3 CQ (we only got the minmatar one for the longest time) and to dedicate MUCH more of their time to fixing the things they had neglected so much in the spaceship gameplay. It was also decided that the plans they DID have for WiS were also way off the mark in regards to what the player base actually wanted out of the feature nor did much of WiS plan actually contribute anything to real gameplay besides just being a social mechanic.

Since then we've gotten Crucible, Inferno, and Retribution, the main features of these being totally redone and rebalanced sections of the game like faction warfare, mining barges and all the cruiser and frigate changes. They still have a long way to go on this path but WiS development isn't completely dead just on hold for probably the next couple of years. Just keep using the normal ship hanger in the mean time.

And btw the minimum requirement wasn't changed for Incarna and the character environments as much as it was for the new version 3 shaders that all the ships are slowly being updated with. The only ones left as far as I know are capitals and freighters and orcas :D

WiS was the test system for the now dead Vampire MMO CCP was producing.

Jim has been informed that WoD is dead, so we probably won't get any new WiS features. Ever.

Oh hey, this thread again. It's been far too long since the last one was on the front page of GD.

WiS is dead. I don't know why we still have WiS functionality installed, that occasionally gets annoyingly activated, if WiS is dead. Should just remove it and put it back later if the plan becomes to re-implement it.

It still provide a great peace at mind to all those players that were previously alienated by lack of a true "character" from the pre-Incarna days.

If you are talking about your Avatar in your Captains Quarters, turn it off if it's causing you problems.

If you are talking about the V3 graphics updates, they aren't done yet... and are primarily done to enable new features yet to be introduced.

If none of the above, I have no idea what you are talking about.

I'd rather have my graphics processing back thanks.

I'll admit, I enjoy the character portraits post-Incarna better than the ones pre-Incarna. I was ugly as hell. I'm still pretty ugly, but now it's more ugly as purgatory.

Well, there WERE plans for walking in sleeper stations to find and fight over artifacts, effectively injecting CCP's own version of Day-Z into Eve, but i believe those plans were shelved.

Yesterday i test star trek online, here a lot planets instations and View form third perspective and station walking in full meaning and features+ simple space style combat feature, these planets small instations are cool even they looks funny, wonder why not in similar things exist in EvE, espetialy EvE is very old SF game...

Im sorry for talking about other games(not related to GD), but need compare some features to EvE and here no orher way to do it...

EvE isn't game, its style of living.

WIS is not only shelved ,the idea of WIS will never come to this game ever.
CCP promised a lott of stuff ,they can,t deliver.
The joke named carbon engine, proves to me that CCP is unable to handle their own software.

the wish of deliver some WIS experience turns out to be a complete joke.
and we have to thank CCP for this.

Unfortuneately for you, alot of viking-levels-of-hope-and-optimism devs still think WiS woudl eb cool, and it is shelved for the next 3-5 years until both average technology catches up with being able to handle the load of a complete WiS, and the playerbase acts at least moderately satisfied with the state of eve.

so not dead, shelved, on life support, no doctors on staff. similar situation to how everyone sees eve every third tuesday and 4th wednesday of every 2nd month.

I never got the whole "The Sims With Spaceships" dealio anyway, so I'm glad it's been shelved. You want to play The Sims ... go play The Sims.

EVE is a spaceship game.

I know a lot of you treat it as a social platform that just happens to have spaceship stuff going on in the background, but that's not what EVE is supposed to be.

Anyway...

As I said, I'm glad WiS is shelved because FiS still needs to be improved.

Indeed... the core of the game is more important.

but at SOME point some company is going to do what eve is doing, hell maybe not even good spaceship combat... but have GREAT WiS, and it might hurt eve a great deal... i dunno

but priorities, and the implication of P2W is too terrifying, even in F2P games, insane in P2P ones. so if anything the riots stopped that from ever happening, still want officer caps and logo paint jobs... but hey some things are more important ya know?

You want WIS, play Dangerous or Star Citizen, this is Eve Online. There will be a several space sims coming out in the next few years. Who knows, one might actually be decent.
