Best combat role for junior player?

All,
I'm returning to EVE after a very long absence. After all the changes the past few years, I'm going to need to relearn the game.

What's the best combat role I can focus on over the short term to make me most attractive to corporations?

I'm not dedicated to one race or way of combat; I just like to shoot things out of the sky. As I progress I'll tweak and redefine my character, but initially I'm looking to get into the fight quickly with a good group of folks.

Thanks!

Fast Tackler/Ewar Pilot

Frigate
Webbifier
Warp Scrambler or Disruptor
Micro Warp Drive

and your good to go
it expands into T2 frigates and T1/T2 ewar cruisers, and the T2 Destroyer.
so there is plenty of scope for development

[edit #1]
have a look at the T1 logistic frigate/cruiser aswell

[edit #2]
forgot to mention, All these paths makes you either the 'guy on point' or the guy the other side call Primary
either way, you generally die 1st .. just so you know Big smile

Nearly any corporation you join will be able to provide you with a list of recommended fleet builds that will give you a good starting skill plan. The weapon/armor type will depend on the fleet composition, but as long as you have a good amount of your core skills trained it wont take long to get into a fleet cruiser/battlecruiser

It would be easier for you to ascertain what makes you more attractive to a corp if you already have some in mind. If you know what each corps 'niche' is you'll be able to train accordingly.

As was said above you can't go wrong with a tackler. It's also advisable to become well skilled ,core, gunnery etc in a particular ship size before moving on to train something bigger.

One big change that happened recently is how they changed the tech 1 logistics ships.

Now a new player with low skills can easily step into that role. So if that interests you, take a look.

Tacklers are -always- of value and of interest.

Scouts are always useful.

Beyond that, just being a pilot who is reliable and online frequently makes one an asset regardless of skillpoints.

All,
Thanks for the advice! I think I'll try starting with a tackler/frigate build and go from there. Once I've sharpened my skills I'll make some decisions.

Id like to point out 2 things

1. While a scout frigate can certainly be built on the cheap and flown by a rookie, the amount of in depth knowledge required to properly asses the situation and make sure that you are giving your fleet the relevant info they need can only be gained with experience.

2. Do not underestimate the power of an electronic warfare cruiser in the hands of a newbie, particularly the blackbird. A 3 week old character in a properly fit blackbird can effectively lock a veteran player out of a fight and that is incredible value for any fleet.
