Dearest Devs,

I had sent in an e-mail to Mr. Coker, the CCP PR guy, looking for him to contact one of you in regards to three questions I had for a research paper I am writing based on emergent gameplay and how it can potentially affect the future of human interaction in virual realms. I'm starting to think he doesn't want to fulfil my request to ask of you, so I'll just ask as a member of the community, before the community: Pretty please? Answer my questions for my scholarly paper? I can be contacted through evemail, if nessicary.

Thank you in advance for your time, should you chose to answer me.

I'm not sure if this will help, but by definition Emergent gameplay essentially is a game design term that refers to video game mechanics that change according to the player's actions (there are other definitions, but believe this is the one you're looking for). Hulkageddon, thousands of players join forces to suicide gank miners. The repercussions being as simple as some players not mining during this event, or logging off for that time period, or doing some other in-game profession during that event. The more complex being, the change of the market, the fluctuating of prices, players begin to number crunch to estimate the change of market values, victim players rage-quitting and so on. There are also a lot of blogs, articles, web-sites, threads/posts about such events and some go into great detail. Specific players can become well-known because of such player-made events through the amount of killsmails.

Hope that at least gives an idea. I tried to find one of the articles I read a few weeks ago that did some pretty intense number crunching, was going to link it here, but couldn't find it :(

Also, a quick google search will lead you to numerous sites about different instances of emergent gameplay in Eve. Hulkageddon was an example. You could go into more detail about how BoB fell, the repercussions it had, everyone involved in that war and so on.

Abandon all hope ye who x up in fleet

We love science and research round here especially if it results in lots of graphs.

Like this one

I think the OP is looking for a response from a Company that is utilising emergent gameplay systems, instead of trying to understand what emergent gameplay systems are.

Oh, yes. I am aware and have a wealth of good rescources already. I was hoping, however, to have three specific questions answered from a developer's perspective. I feel that these questions would add a very unique and insightful angle to my paper. One that I cannot provide otherwise, as I am not a developer.

Since you asked so nicely, good sir:

1) What do you think, from a developer's perspective, are the factors that have contributed to the success of EVE Online as a game in which emergent gameplay is used?

2) What do you think, from a developer's perspective, is the potential of this kind of interaction for people in future digital realms?

3) Do you see this type of interaction going beyond gaming in the future?

Those are my three questions for a CCP dev that I would like insight on for my scholarly paper on the matter of emergent gameplay and it's potential. What do you, the community, think of this matter?

Hi,

I've removed a couple of trolling posts and moved this thread to the correct location on the forums.

I'll email my seniors at CCP to make sure they know about your thread, but you probably want to be a little patient as a lot of people have leave at this time of year.

In the mean time, good luck with your search for answers!

Excellent, I hadn't thought to try a petition, I didn't think that would be suitable. I will give that a go, however! Thank you CCP Navigator! :3

Maybe this Gamasutra article could be helpful? EVE Online and the meaning of 'sandbox' Gamasutra's articles are by "theorists" inside the game industry, so they're the real thing, not thoughts from the players peanut gallery. Check out the game designers comments to the article on EVE-- pretty interesting stuff. With some searching, you might find some good theory/discussion on emergent gameplay in Gamasutra.

That looks like it will be a very good rescource! Thank you, Telegram Sam! I'll have to add that to my list of references and pour over it for good info. :3
